Min Hyung-bae, Candidate for the Integrated Mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju, Signs Policy Agreement for ‘Citizen Literature City’ with Chairman of the National Assembly Education Committee

Signed a ‘Reading City Policy Agreement’ with Chairman Kim Young-ho at his election camp on the 14th - Announced five major literary policies including ‘One Citizen, One Book Writing’ and ‘Fostering Namdo Literature and May Stories’ - Candidate Min stated, “A Nobel Prize-winning author following in the footsteps of Han Kang will emerge... I will revitalize the region through books.”

(Break News Gwangju·Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Min Hyung-bae, the Democratic Party of Korea’s candidate for the Integrated Mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju, has presented a blueprint to transform Jeonnam-Gwangju into South Korea’s representative ‘Citizen Literature City.’

On the afternoon of the 14th, Candidate Min Hyung-bae held a ‘Reading City Policy Announcement and Agreement Ceremony’ with Kim Young-ho, Chairman of the National Assembly Education Committee, at his election camp and announced his core cultural policies.

This agreement was established to foster local culture and revitalize the community by creating a citizen-participatory reading and literature ecosystem, based on the cultural identity and rich regional assets of the soon-to-be-launched Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City.

Kim Young-ho, Chairman of the National Assembly Education Committee, who attended the signing ceremony, lent his support to the policy in his opening remarks, stating, “We must make the ‘National Reading Project,’ which is currently the National Assembly’s top priority, flourish brilliantly in Jeonnam-Gwangju, the home of democracy and the humanities.”

In response, Candidate Min replied, “If we properly implement reading policies based on Chairman Kim Young-ho’s proposal, the urban competitiveness of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City will take a significant leap forward.” He further emphasized, “I believe that within this environment, a second and third Nobel Prize in Literature laureate, following in the footsteps of author Han Kang, will surely emerge.”

The five key policies announced by Candidate Min on this day for the creation of a "Citizen Literature City of Jeonnam-Gwangju" include: establishing infrastructure that allows easy access to books anywhere in daily life; spreading a culture where citizens directly record their own lives and experiences; creating a virtuous cycle structure that simultaneously revitalizes stagnant local bookstores and the publishing industry; expanding citizen dramatic readings and play reading programs; and discovering Namdo literature and May stories as representative global content.

Candidate Min expressed his aspirations, stating, "Books are the oldest vessels that record a person's life and a region's historical time," and adding, "I will firmly establish a new milestone for a 'Citizen Literature City' in Jeonnam-Gwangju, where books revitalize the local economy and literature closely connects citizens."
