Danyang County Signs Agreement with China’s Changbai Mountain UNESCO Global Geopark to Strengthen International Cooperation

Promoting Geoscience Heritage Conservation and Tourism Exchange with Changbai Mountain Geopark at APGN General Assembly in Malaysia

Danyang County is joining hands with China’s Changbai Mountain UNESCO Global Geopark to further strengthen the international cooperation network among Global Geoparks.

Danyang County announced that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for mutual exchange and cooperation with China’s Changbai Mountain UNESCO Global Geopark in the Baekdu Mountain region during the 9th Asia-Pacific Global Geopark Network (APGN) General Assembly held in Langkawi, Malaysia.

This agreement was established to allow the two Global Geoparks, each possessing a unique geological environment, to share know-how in multifaceted fields such as geoscience heritage conservation, education, and sustainable tourism, and to promote practical cooperative projects. Accordingly, both sides agreed to share knowledge and best practices in geoscience heritage management, while actively pursuing the operation of educational programs, personnel exchanges, and joint projects for the development of local communities. Danyang County plans to develop this agreement into a practical cooperation model that leverages the unique geological characteristics of both regions, rather than treating it as a mere one-time exchange.

In addition, the delegation met with Artur Sa, President of the Global Geopark Network (GGN), and introduced the major geological heritage of the Danyang UNESCO World Geopark as well as the conservation and education projects currently underway since its designation. During the meeting, they explained the purpose and operational direction of the recently established 'UNESCO World Geopark Administrative Council' and exchanged views on establishing a policy and administrative cooperation system between domestic and international geoparks. Based on the Administrative Council, Danyang County plans to solidify cooperation among domestic geoparks while significantly expanding exchanges with international networks such as APGN and GGN.

Danyang County Governor Kim Moon-geun emphasized that World Geoparks are an international cooperation system that connects the geological heritage and experiences possessed by a region to sustainable development. He stated that, starting with this agreement, they will share mutual experiences and best practices to develop practical exchanges and joint projects. He added that he would strengthen cooperation among domestic UNESCO World Geoparks and actively communicate with international networks to widely promote the value of Danyang's outstanding geological heritage to the world.
