Gimhae Targets Wuxi, China’s Bio Hub… Expanding the Scope of the ‘Biomedical City’

On-site Inspection of AI Medical and BCI Technologies… Simultaneous Expansion of Industrial and Administrative Cooperation Beyond Sister City Exchanges

Gimhae City is accelerating cooperation in the future biomedical industry and strengthening city diplomacy by joining hands with Wuxi, a leading bio-industry city in China. The move is drawing attention for going beyond simple sister city exchanges to actively seek to secure cutting-edge medical technology and industrial networks.

The city announced that it visited Wuxi from the 7th to the 9th for a three-day, two-night trip to participate in the ‘2026 Taihu Bay Biopharmaceutical Industry Fair’ and discuss ways to expand cooperation in the bio and biomedical industries.

This visit was made at the official invitation of Wuxi City, and a delegation of seven people accompanied the group, including City officials such as Economic Bureau Director Park Jong-hwan and representatives from the Gimhae Biomedical Industry Promotion Agency. The delegation attended the opening ceremony of the trade fair and an international forum to grasp global trends in the bio-pharmaceutical industry and discussed cooperation models with local institutions and companies that could be linked to Gimhae's biomedical industry.

In particular, they showed keen interest in AI-based digital health and next-generation medical technology, assessing the potential for practical industrial linkages.

The visit also included on-site inspections of cutting-edge medical technology sites. The delegation visited Kangnam University Hospital and the Wuxi Brain-Machine Science Innovation Pilot Center to examine clinical applications of AI-based digital medical systems and Brain-Machine Interface (BCI) technology.

Gimhae City plans to utilize these findings to identify policies for fostering the future medical industry and to set directions for research and development.

Along with industrial cooperation, administrative exchanges between the two cities are also expanding. Through working-level consultations with the Wuxi Foreign Affairs Office, the city decided to officially invite a delegation from Wuxi to the Gimhae Buncheong Ceramic Festival to be held this coming November. They also agreed to expand personnel exchanges, including the mutual dispatch of public officials and the introduction of practical training programs. Park Jong-hwan, Director of the Economic Bureau, stated, “Wuxi is a city with high competitiveness in the bio-industry within China,” adding, “This visit served as an opportunity to expand the foundation for international cooperation in Gimhae’s biomedical industry and further strengthen practical administrative and industrial exchanges between sister cities.”

Meanwhile, Gimhae and Wuxi have maintained exchanges in the economic, cultural, and administrative fields since establishing a sister city relationship in 2005, and this visit is expected to further expand the cooperation network centered on the bio and biomedical industries.
