Gwangju City Prevents Flooding During Rainy Season… ‘Neighborhood Storm Drain Maintenance’ Citizen Reporting Event
Run for 3 weeks from the 8th to the 30th… Reports of blockages and covers accepted via the Safety Reporting System - ‘Safety Kits’ containing practical safety items to be presented to 35 participants selected by lottery
(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Gwangju Metropolitan City is stepping up to prevent urban flooding together with its citizens ahead of the full-scale rainy season.
In conjunction with the ‘Intensive Reporting Period for Summer Disaster and Safety Risk Factors,’ Gwangju City announced that it will hold a citizen-participatory ‘Neighborhood Storm Drain Maintenance Reporting Event’ for three weeks, from the 8th to the 30th.
This event was organized to proactively prevent flood damage and raise safety awareness in the community by encouraging citizens to directly identify and report risk factors, such as blocked storm drains or the installation of unauthorized covers, which are major causes of road flooding during heavy summer rains. Previously, Gwangju City designated the period from June to August as the "Intensive Reporting Period for Summer Disaster and Safety Risk Factors" and is operating an intensive monitoring and reporting system for disaster risks with a high probability of occurring during the summer, such as heavy rain, typhoons, landslides, heatwaves, and water safety issues.
Citizens wishing to participate in the event can report clogged or covered storm drains within the Gwangju area by taking photos via the "Safety Complaint Hotline" smartphone application or the official website. Participation is completed by submitting the issued report number and personal information for prize delivery to the designated event page.
The city plans to select a total of 35 participants through a random draw and present them with "Safety Kits" that can be usefully utilized in daily life. The Safety Kit consists of practical safety items, including a portable alarm, mosquito repellent, mini bandages, and a toothbrush and toothpaste set.
Meanwhile, Gwangju City operated the ‘Spring Disaster and Safety Intensive Reporting Event’ from March to May, successfully preventing risk factors in the fields of forest fires, thawing season risks, child safety, and festivals and events, and provided prizes to 40 participating citizens.
