Spacebank (CEO Woney Lee), a company specializing in DX solutions, is emerging as a core partner for next-generation defense innovation that combines artificial intelligence (AI) with uncrewed systems.
At the Defense Data Lab Operation and Development Plan Seminar held at the Pangyo Startup Campus late last month, Spacebank drew industry attention by revealing a blueprint for a Physical AI Demonstration LAB currently being promoted in collaboration with Sungkyunkwan University.
The heart of the Physical AI Demonstration Lab, scheduled for unveiling next month, is the cloud-based Software Defined Robot (SDR) platform developed by Spacebank.
This platform goes beyond simple hardware control and aims for a data-centered defense robot operating system. Key core functions include:
▶ Integrated SDR Management: Integrated control of various robot types from a single platform.
▶ Advanced Communication and Security: Support for military standard DDS communication and establishment of a secure transmission system for sensor data.
▶ Real-time Advancement: Equipped with Over-the-Air (OTA)-based remote updates and Vision-Language-Action (VLA)-based command generation functions.
▶ Digital Twin Learning: Maximizing robot judgment precision by comparatively learning virtual data from simulation environments and actual physical environment data.
This seminar served as a venue to confirm the achievements of the Defense Data Lab operated by Sungkyunkwan University and the Army Training & Doctrine Command. Still, there were high expectations for the execution-oriented AI system supported by Spacebank’s technological prowess.
Mike Kyong Moo Mang, Director of the AI Enterprise Cooperation Center at Sungkyunkwan University, highly evaluated the strategic value of the collaboration with Spacebank, stating that networks among industry, academia, research institutes, government, and the military are essential to quench the thirst for data in the strictly secure defense sector.
In fact, Spacebank will serve as a technical bridge to deploy and demonstrate AI models—developed by large defense companies such as Hyundai Rotem and Hanwha Aerospace — using 3TB-class secure data from the Defense Data Lab on actual hardware (robots).
Spacebank CEO Woney Lee, who attended the seminar, participated in in-depth discussions with experts from industry, academia, and research institutes regarding the development direction of future defense power. Analysts suggest that Spacebank’s demonstration platform will become the cornerstone of a Korean-style Defense Data Factory, especially as overseas powers like China operate physical AI factories that generate data from thousands of robots.
Byeongkyu Kim, Director of the Future Defense Convergence Research Center at Sungkyunkwan University, emphasized that the demonstration lab to be showcased with Spacebank is the culmination of defense innovation moving toward uncrewed systems and Physical AI. He noted that in an era in which data is a strategic asset, Spacebank’s platform will serve as core infrastructure to strengthen the South Korean military’s AI capabilities.
Starting with the construction of this demonstration lab, Spacebank plans to expand the defense data ecosystem and continuously strengthen response capabilities for future AI-based warfare where security and innovation coexist.
