Samyang Foods Co. has moved one step closer to securing both Korean and English trademark rights for its globally popular Buldak brand.
According to sources from the food industry on Tuesday, the Ministry of Intellectual Property published a notice on Monday regarding the company‘s application for the Buldak name in both Korean and English scripts.
The publication signifies that the applications have passed examination, and if no objections are filed during the 30-day opposition period, the trademarks will be officially registered.
While the English-language trademark covers both instant noodles and sauces, the Korean-language rights are restricted to the ramyeon category. Regulators determined that Buldak serves as a common noun for spicy sauce in Korea, but it is highly distinctive in the instant noodle market due to the success of the Buldak Ramen (Hot Chicken Flavor Ramen) brand.
The move for domestic registration follows a request in January from Samyang Foods Vice Chairman Kim Jung-soo for government assistance to protect the brand’s identity.
