S. Korea holds evacuation drill simulating political unrest in Georgia

SEOUL, May 8 (Yonhap) -- The foreign ministry said Friday it has conducted a simulation drill in Georgia for the evacuation of South Koreans in the event of political unrest as part of efforts to strengthen overseas crisis response capabilities.

The drill took place Wednesday at the South Korean Embassy in Georgia in cooperation with the National Fire Agency and civilian experts under a scenario in which escalating political instability in the country forces South Korean nationals to evacuate, according to the ministry.

The ministry conducts crisis response drills with overseas diplomatic missions on a regular basis under various crisis scenarios. In April, it carried out a simulation exercise in Kenya, based on a scenario involving the hijacking of a ship by pirates.

On the sidelines of the drill, senior foreign ministry officials met with officials from relevant Georgian agencies and requested cooperation regarding a recent increase in accidents involving South Korean visitors to mountainous regions in Georgia, the ministry said.
