Hanwha Power is expanding its business territory in the Canadian energy infrastructure market by spearheading carbon-reduction solutions.

Hanwha Power announced on May 20 (local time) that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Canadian energy company Pembina Pipeline for an eco-friendly power generation business. The core of this cooperation involves applying a supercritical carbon dioxide-based waste heat recovery (WHR) system to the pipeline booster stations operated by Pembina.

This partnership is being pursued as part of the Industrial and Technological Benefits (ITB) strategy linked to the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP) currently being promoted by Hanwha Ocean. The two companies plan to review the technical and economic feasibility targeting Pembina’s gas infrastructure facilities and set out to discover candidate sites for pilot projects. They will also concurrently explore demonstration business opportunities for the commercialization of eco-friendly power generation in the North American midstream market.

The waste heat recovery power generation system put forward by Hanwha Power utilizes carbon dioxide in a supercritical state, which possesses both liquid and gaseous properties simultaneously, as a working fluid. Its greatest strength is that it has higher power generation efficiency than conventional steam-based methods, enables equipment miniaturization, and is capable of waterless operation that uses no water at all.

In the North American oil and gas market, where water usage is limited and carbon emission regulations are strict, this technology is considered a promising alternative. This is because it recycles waste heat generated from industrial equipment such as gas turbines, thereby producing electric power without additional fuel consumption and simultaneously achieving improved energy efficiency and carbon reduction.

Pembina is a major energy company headquartered in Alberta, Canada, possessing extensive pipeline assets. Through this cooperation, Pembina plans to enhance the operational efficiency of its existing assets while reviewing the applicability of new eco-friendly technologies to elevate corporate value.

Michael Sicker, President of Hanwha Power Systems Americas, emphasized, “This cooperation is a meaningful starting point for expanding eco-friendly energy solutions in the Canadian market,” adding, “We will contribute to mutual growth with local industries as well as the creation of long-term business value.”
