CJ CheilJedang announced on the 22nd that it conducted education on biodegradable materials and resource recycling for approximately 170 sixth-grade students at an elementary school in Nowon-gu, Seoul, on the 21st.

The education program was designed to help students understand the concept of resource recycling easily and engagingly by combining lectures utilizing visual aids with hands-on activities.

The session focused on explaining the concept and formation principles of Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), an eco-friendly biodegradable material, as well as its natural biodegradation mechanism and the differences from general plastics. In particular, video content depicting the natural decomposition of straws and tableware made from PHA in marine environments was utilized to enhance students' understanding.

PHA is an eco-friendly polymer material that microorganisms accumulate within their cells after consuming plant-derived components. It is characterized by its ability to naturally decompose not only in industrial and household composting facilities but also in soil and marine environments. Currently, it is being applied in various fields, including straws, cosmetic containers, artificial turf infill, paper coatings, and tableware.

Hands-on activities were also conducted alongside the education. CJ CheilJedang provided participating students with a "biodegradable experience kit" consisting of regular plastic straws, PHA straws, and mini flowerpots. Over the course of about three months, students will experience the meaning of resource recycling by directly observing the process of microorganisms in the soil decomposing each straw.

A CJ CheilJedang official stated, "We organized this experiential education program to help future generations naturally understand biodegradable material technology and the necessity of resource recycling," adding, "Moving forward, we will continue to promote the value of eco-friendly materials and strive to spread a culture of resource recycling based on our PHA technology."
