CJ Olive Young's U.S. Comeback After 8 Years

CJ Olive Young is set to make a full-fledged entry into the U.S. offline retail market this May, marking its first attempt in eight years. As the company makes thorough preparations for its comeback, industry attention is focused on whether this North American expansion can successfully take root.

According to industry sources on April 23, CJ Olive Young had initially planned to open its first U.S. store in Pasadena, California, on May 21. However, the launch has been delayed by about a week due to local licensing procedures. The company is now accelerating final preparations with a target opening in late May.

CJ Olive Young plans to open four stores across the U.S. within the year. The first store is considered a key milestone that will determine the pace of future expansion. It also carries symbolic significance as the company’s re-entry into the U.S. market after eight years.

The delay highlights the high entry barriers in the U.S. retail market. California, in particular, is known for its stringent safety regulations, including fire, construction, and accessibility standards. Even store interior work—such as installing shelves or lighting—is classified as “structural modification,” requiring separate permits. Businesses must also pass final on-site inspections by fire authorities and local governments before opening. Failure to meet these standards often leads to delays.

CJ Olive Young’s previous U.S. venture dates back to 2018, when its predecessor, CJ OliveNetworks, established “CJ Olive Young America” and “Olive Young New York” entities. However, due to low awareness of K-beauty at the time and insufficient strategy, the company failed to achieve meaningful results. It eventually withdrew, liquidating its New York entity in 2020 without opening physical stores.

The company re-entered the U.S. market in January 2025 by establishing “CJ Olive Young USA” in Los Angeles.

Currently, the U.S. entity is seen as being in a “foundation-building” phase rather than generating profits. According to CJ Olive Young’s consolidated audit report, the U.S. unit recorded a net loss of 3.5 billion won in 2025. This is attributed to upfront investments required for store acquisition, logistics infrastructure, and initial inventory. Despite no revenue generation yet, the company has built assets worth approximately 26.7 billion won—indicating strong commitment to entering the U.S. market.

Its financial structure reflects characteristics of an early-stage entity. While the debt ratio relative to equity is notable, this is largely due to investments funded through headquarters support and external financing. The current losses remain within a manageable range, suggesting a focus on mid- to long-term expansion rather than short-term profitability.

The key question is whether these investments will translate into tangible results. The success of the U.S. expansion will likely depend on how quickly the assets built in 2025 convert into revenue from 2026 onward.

CJ Olive Young’s global strategy centers on integrating online and offline channels. Leveraging its global mall platform and K-beauty experience accumulated through foreign visitors to Korea, the company aims to expand consumer touchpoints while directly entering key markets through physical stores. At the same time, it is pursuing a two-track strategy—partnering with local distribution channels such as Sephora to expand scale, while strengthening profitability through its private-label (PB) brands.

In addition, CJ Olive Young plans to bring about 400 small and mid-sized Korean indie brands into the U.S. market. For these brands, which have struggled to secure local distribution channels, Olive Young’s stores are expected to serve as a de facto export gateway.

An industry insider said, “While the North American market environment has improved compared to the past, it will not be easy to achieve results in the short term without organizational stability and strong localization strategies. This first store will be a critical test of execution capability and sustainability, not just a simple store opening.”

A CJ Olive Young official stated, “We are pursuing a comprehensive online-to-offline strategy to expand the K-beauty experience that began in Korea into global markets. We will also strengthen our role as a global platform supporting the overseas expansion of small and mid-sized K-beauty brands.”
