Amorepacific has developed a next-generation nanotechnology-based delivery system designed to improve the effectiveness of cosmetic ingredients in the skin, the company said.
The research, conducted in collaboration with a team led by Professor Choi Si-young at KAIST, was selected as a cover article in the May 2026 issue of ACS Nano (Vol. 20, Issue 17).
The study introduces a lipid-based delivery system that has been reduced to approximately 20 nanometers (nm) in size while maintaining structural stability. The company has named the technology “Lipo3Ex” and has applied it to selected skincare products.
In cosmetic science, smaller delivery systems are generally associated with better penetration and efficacy. However, reducing particle size often leads to instability, particularly for carriers below 50nm, which are highly sensitive to environmental factors such as temperature and pH.
To address this limitation, the research team focused on triterpenoids, plant-derived compounds known for their structural properties.
The study found that triterpenoids help reinforce molecular interactions within lipid membranes, enabling the formation of stable nanostructures at significantly smaller sizes.
This approach allowed the researchers to achieve both miniaturization and structural stability, which have traditionally been difficult to combine in cosmetic delivery systems.
According to the study, the nanocarrier demonstrated improved diffusion across deeper layers of the skin in human skin tests, compared to conventional delivery systems. The results indicate a more uniform distribution of active ingredients, rather than localized absorption.
Amorepacific’s R&I Center, in collaboration with KAIST, has developed a next-generation nanotechnology-based cosmetic delivery system.
The research team also used multiple analytical techniques, including cryogenic electron microscopy, X-ray scattering analysis, and molecular dynamics simulations, to verify the formation and stability of the nanostructures at the molecular level.
The findings highlight the growing role of material science and nanotechnology in the development of cosmetic delivery systems. The study suggests that such technologies could contribute to more precise and scientifically designed skincare formulations.
