Lee Jung-hyun Promises to "Build AI and Aerospace Industry Belt"... Local and Metropolitan Candidates Also Appeal for Support to "Check the Democratic Party's Monopoly"
(Break News Gwangju/Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-soo = As the June 3 election campaign officially begins, People Power Party candidates in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions are traversing every corner of their constituencies, pouring all their efforts into winning votes. Over the two days of May 25 and 26, the candidates carried out packed campaign schedules, presenting pledges for regional development while calling for the "dismantling of the one-party monopoly structure."
Lee Jung-hyun, the candidate for the Integrated Special City Mayor of Jeonnam and Gwangju, continued his wide-ranging campaign with mega-campaigns traveling between Jeonnam and Gwangju.
Candidate Lee began his campaign on the 25th with a rally in front of Suncheon University, toured the entire Jeonnam region including Gwangyang, Yeosu, Goheung, Jangheung, Gangjin, and Beolgyo in Boseong, and then filled the day with street campaigning in the Gwangju area. On the 26th, he plans to appeal for support by visiting key hubs, starting with morning greetings at Bia Market, followed by the Gwangyang 5-Day Market, Yangsan-dong Lake Park, the BYC intersection in Sangmu District, and Sangmu Citizens Park.
In a message, Candidate Lee emphasized, “I will create a massive national AI and data cluster in Gwangju and establish an industrial belt for offshore wind power, hydrogen, energy storage, and power grids in Jeonnam.” He added, “I will achieve a great leap forward for the regional economy by implementing a major transformation project for future chemicals, hydrogen, and steel in Yeosu and Gwangyang, and connecting a massive data center with the aerospace industry in Haenam and Goheung.”
Local National Assembly and City Council candidates also expanded their contact with residents from early morning until late at night. On the 25th, Ahn Tae-wook, the National Assembly candidate for Gwangsan-eul, engaged with young people and merchants around commercial areas, including holding rallies in front of the Suwan Lotte Outlet and Kookmin Bank. On the 26th, he is scheduled to begin morning greetings at the Bia Gwangsan Intersection, tour Suwan, Jangan, and Singa-dong, and conclude evening greetings at the Unnam 6-danji Intersection.
Yang Hye-ryeong, a City Council candidate (Buk-gu District 1), began her campaign on the 25th with morning greetings at Gwangju Station, touring the Buk-gu area and holding evening rallies at the Donggwangju IC Munhwa Intersection. On the 26th, after morning greetings at the Seobang Market Intersection, she will pass through Jungang, Im, Sinan, and Usan-dong to meet citizens on their way home from work at the Gakhwa Intersection.
Cheon Hyeok-jin, a City Council candidate (Mokpo District 5), began a picket campaign at the Mokpo Waterfall Intersection on the 25th, held a meeting with conservative activists at Peace Square, and engaged with young people at Rose Street and Samhyangcheon. Proportional representation candidates also set out to boost the party's approval ratings through differentiated messages and on-the-ground campaigning.
Lee O-sook, a proportional representation candidate for the City Council, met with hikers at the entrance of Jeungsimsa Temple on Mt. Mudeung on the morning of the 25th and appealed for their support. Candidate Lee expressed a sincere pledge, stating, "Just as hikers struggle to climb the mountain, and just as they silently reach the summit even if it is difficult right now, I will walk and walk diligently."
Kim Soon-ok, a proportional representation candidate for the City Council, traveled from Gwangju to Mokpo on the 25th, a substitute public holiday, to conduct picket campaigning. In particular, she held a meeting with activists from local conservative groups at Mokpo Peace Square alongside Candidate Cheon Hyeok-jin to listen to the candid voices of the citizens.
Lim Beom-seop, a candidate for the Gwangsan District Council (District D), traversed the Cheomdan 1 and 2-dong areas on the 25th, starting with greeting residents of the Cheomdan Daeju Piore Apartments and visiting places such as the Sports Park and the Hospital Intersection. On the 26th, plans are in place to meet with residents at the Buyoung 6th and 7th Apartments and other locations to actively promote lifestyle-oriented pledges, including the expansion of "gap care" (caregiving services), the creation of safe routes to and from school, the expansion of after-school programs, and support for the re-employment of women whose careers have been interrupted.
On the 25th, candidates for the Yeosu City Council—Jeong Jin-young, Kim Hee-taek, and Cho Hye-hyun—joined the campaign vehicle alongside Lee Jung-hyun, the candidate for the United Special City Mayor, to conduct a joint intensive campaign tour across the entire city.
Candidate Jeong Jin-young (District J) presented customized pledges for the development of Yeosu and asked for support for the People Power Party candidate.
Candidate Kim Hee-taek (District C) appealed for a vote, stating, "To properly check and monitor the Democratic Party of Korea, a People Power Party candidate must be elected."
Jo Hye-hyeon, a proportional representation candidate for the City Council, pointed out the harmful effects of a one-party monopoly and emphasized the need for a balanced composition of the council, stating, “If the Yeosu City Council is filled solely with a specific political party, the functions of checks and balances will disappear.”
Local political circles are focusing their attention on how the extensive campaigning activities of People Power Party candidates, covering vast constituencies, will lead to changes in voter sentiment in the upcoming June 3 election.
