Boosting Momentum for 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo… ‘Namdo K-Garden Festival’ Opens September 11

Spreading 15,000㎡ from Yeomun Culture Street to Migwan Plaza… Unfolding under the theme ‘Yeosu Night Garden Embracing Islands’ – Rich attractions including Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medalist Hwang Ji-hae’s representative garden ‘Thornbush Dream’ – 46 participatory living gardens created by citizens and merchants… Linked to downtown tourism via free shuttle buses

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Integrated Special City of Jeonnam-Gwangju is embarking in earnest to build momentum in advance for the successful hosting of the ‘2026 Yeosu World Island Expo.’ The city announced that it will hold the ‘Namdo K-Garden Festival’ from September 11 to October 31 in a section of approximately 15,000㎡ stretching from Yeomun Culture Street in Yeoseo-dong, Yeosu, to Migwan Plaza. This festival is a large-scale urban regeneration garden project that transforms downtown streets, plazas, and commercial areas into three-dimensional gardens, allowing anyone to encounter forests and gardens within a 15-minute radius of their daily living area. It is designed to allow citizens and tourists to experience diverse garden displays and cultural events simultaneously while walking through their daily routines.

The official slogan of the event is "Yeosu Night Garden Embracing the Islands." It reinterprets Yeosu's unique, jewel-like island and sea landscapes into the form of urban gardens, intricately connecting every corner of streets, plazas, and alleyways with gardens. Through this, the concept is to present a unique brand called the "Garden City in the Forest," where the entire city is connected as one giant garden.

The core highlight of this festival is "Thornbush Dream," a representative garden presented by world-renowned garden designer Hwang Ji-hae, a native of the integrated Seoul Metropolitan City. Artist Hwang, who received worldwide acclaim for winning a gold medal at the 2023 Chelsea Flower Show in the UK and showcasing the traditional Namdo garden ‘Aeyangdan’ at the Korean Cultural Center in New York in 2024, visualizes the red sun, the subtropical forests unique to the South, and the spatiotemporal images of the future awaiting the city and the island through the garden design in this work.

In addition, a total of 46 gardens—including 10 artist gardens, 30 commercial gardens, and 6 participatory gardens selected through a rigorous open call—will be installed throughout the city center. Each garden is designed as a symbiotic space that organically connects streets, commercial districts, and the city center.

In particular, the commercial and participatory gardens are being promoted as a ‘living garden’ model, in which local citizens and merchants directly participate in the planning and creation. This transforms small, overlooked spaces in front of shops or spare areas in alleyways into sentimental garden spaces where citizens want to linger. To ensure sustainable management even after the event concludes, a citizen-led ‘Garden Supporters’ group will be launched and operated.

A rich array of cultural events set against the backdrop of the garden spaces is also being prepared. Diverse experiential content that blends gardens and art—such as flea markets, customized gardening experience programs, and garden busking performances—will be continuously presented throughout the event, transforming it into a convergence festival where visitors can ‘see, walk, experience, and stay.’

Furthermore, transportation convenience will be significantly enhanced to allow visitors to the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo to enjoy the nightlife and romance of downtown Yeosu beyond the main expo grounds all at once. Free shuttle buses will operate until 10 PM every night on a 15.6 km round-trip route connecting the main expo grounds and the Garden Festival site. This aims to improve visitor mobility while simultaneously stimulating the local economy by attracting tourists to downtown commercial districts. Moon Mi-ran, Director of the Forestry and Recreation Division of Gwangju Metropolitan City, stated, “This Namdo K-Garden Festival will serve as a valuable opportunity to support the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and to widely promote the unique garden culture of the integrated city both domestically and internationally.” She added, “We will make preparations without any setbacks so that gardens can establish themselves as a core brand and growth engine for the city through romantic gardens that capture the beautiful islands and seas of Yeosu.”
