Election Aftermath Originating in Honam… Civic Groups Urge "Jeong Cheong-rae's Resignation and Investigation into Primary Fraud"
‘Gwangju-Jeonnam Democratic Citizens’ Alliance for Defending National Sovereignty’ Holds 8th Day of Parallel Struggle Rally… Defines “Crushing Local Election Defeat as Result of Democracy’,” Urges Governor Kim Young-rok to File Application for Preservation of Evidence of Primary Fraud… Also Criticizes Shinsegae Chairman Chung Yong-jin’s “History Desecration Marketing” as Out of Control
(Break News Gwangju·Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Even after the local elections have concluded, a fierce political backlash surrounding the election results continues to rage in the Honam region.
The ‘Gwangju-Jeonnam Democratic Citizens’ Alliance for Defending National Sovereignty’ (hereinafter the Alliance, Representative Kim Beom-tae, Co-Executive Chairperson Lee Ju-yeon) held a ‘Parallel Struggle (8th Day)’ rally on the 18th and strongly urged the immediate resignation of Democratic Party Representative Jeong Cheong-rae, who is packaging the election defeat as a victory.
At the rally held on this day, the Citizens' Solidarity presented specific local election data and officially declared the "defeat" of the Chung Cheong-rae leadership. According to the Citizens' Solidarity, the Democratic Party won only 119 seats in the mayoral elections, allowing the People Power Party (95 seats), the Cho Kuk Innovation Party (2 seats), and independents (11 seats) to catch up fiercely.
In particular, regarding the proportional representation vote share for metropolitan areas, they pointed out that while the Democratic Party failed to secure a majority with 47.2%, the People Power Party surged to 42.8%, and the Cho Kuk Innovation Party (5.4%) and the New Reform Party (2.1%) split the vote.
Co-Executive Committee Chairperson Lee Ju-yeon strongly criticized the Democratic Party, stating, “I am outraged by the shamelessness of the Jeong Cheong-rae leadership, which claims victory despite this.” She continued, “The culmination of the arrogance and harmful practices shown by the Democratic Party leadership was the illegality and unfairness displayed in the primary election for the Mayor of Gwangju, South Jeolla Province. By pushing ahead without apology or self-reflection, they have degraded Gwangju and South Jeolla, the sanctuaries of democracy, into the ‘number one hotspot for rigged primaries.’”
Chairperson Lee specifically pointed out, “These allegations of fraud are not a matter of the voting by party members with voting rights, but rather the mobilization of fraudulent methods and manipulation during the public opinion polling process targeting ordinary citizens.” She sharply asserted, “Representative Jeong Cheong-rae and the leadership must immediately resign and form an emergency countermeasures committee to uncover the truth. Otherwise, the Democratic Party is no different from the National Election Commission, which has lost its impartiality.”
The Citizens’ Solidarity also urged Governor Kim Young-rok, a party directly involved in the primary, to make a forward-looking decision. Chairman Lee appealed, “To uncover the truth behind the illegality of the primary election, I request that Governor Kim Young-rok personally submit a ‘Request for Preservation of Evidence of the Fraudulent Primary’ to the court within the six-month legal preservation period.” He added, “As the principle dictates that the party directly involved must step forward, I urge you to reconsider the matter from scratch and act courageously, for the sake of the political pride of Gwangju, Jeonnam, a sacred site of democratization.”
Furthermore, the Citizens’ Solidarity expanded its condemnation to the Shinsegae Group, asserting that the corruption of politics has led to the corruption of capital.
They expressed outrage, stating, “Because politics is corrupt, corrupt merchants like Chung Yong-jin are running rampant with impunity.” They further declared, “Starbucks’ ‘5·18 Tank Day’ and ‘Table-top’ marketing campaigns are acts that insult democracy by exploiting the noble spirit of the May 18 Uprising and the unjust death of martyr Park Jong-cheol for commercial purposes to sell coffee.”
She continued by pointing out, “While the runaway power of such opportunistic businessmen ought to be controlled by proper political authority, it is impossible for the ruling Democratic Party to control such power under the Jeong Cheong-rae regime, which uses it solely for personal political goals and as a means to secure a consecutive term.” She sharply criticized, “That is why Chairman Jeong Yong-jin believes he can simply apologize verbally without taking any responsible action.”
Finally, Chairperson Lee Ju-yeon emphasized the historical justification of this struggle by likening it to the March 1st Independence Movement of 1919. Chairperson Lee stated, “There may be limitations in that even if our Citizens’ Solidarity fights in reality, we cannot immediately change massive power,” but asserted, “However, just as that cry became a wildfire of the independence movement that ultimately brought liberation, the demands we are making for Jeong Cheong-rae’s resignation and the condemnation of the fraudulent primary election will surely be met with condemnation in the court of history, even if they are not realized immediately in reality.”
The Citizens' Solidarity concluded the rally by stating, “We will definitely show that the world is not a place where the powerful simply win, but a place where those who persistently resist for justice eventually change things for the better,” and adding, “We will fight to the end with all citizens of the city and province to ensure the removal of Jeong Cheong-rae, who crushed Honam politics, in the upcoming party leader election at the national convention.”
