KEPCO KDN Accelerates 'Public Interest Renewable Energy' Project... Secures Government Investment Approval
Expansion of Solar Power Utilizing Idle Public Land via Approval for Jeonnam and Chungbuk SPC Establishment - Up to 50% of Power Generation Profits Returned to Local Community... Establishing a 'Public-Led Win-Win Model' Based on Energy ICT
(Naju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = KEPCO KDN, a public enterprise specializing in energy ICT, is embarking on full-scale project implementation after securing additional government investment approval for the establishment of Special Purpose Corporations (SPCs) for the 'Public Interest Renewable Energy Construction' project.
Since signing business agreements related to renewable energy with Jeollanam-do and the Chungbuk Development Corporation in October and December of last year, respectively, KEPCO KDN has been proceeding with the government investment approval process to begin full-scale project implementation.
With this additional approval, KEPCO KDN has completed the establishment of the Jeonnam and Chungbuk SPCs, following the existing Gwangju SPC and domestic/overseas microinverter SPCs. Through this, it is set to play a pivotal role in overseeing the expansion and operation of solar power generation facilities utilizing idle public land owned by local governments, such as public parking lots, within Jeonnam and Chungbuk provinces.
In particular, this project, conducted in collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), is a public-led win-win model that departs from existing private-sector-led development methods and returns up to 50% of power generation profits to local residents. The proceeds are expected to be utilized as public funds for purposes such as the Electricity Basic Pension and the Regional Energy Welfare Fund, providing tangible benefits to local residents.
KDN will fully apply its power grid operation technology and integrated energy ICT solutions, accumulated over 30 years, to the field. The plan is to maximize renewable energy generation efficiency by deploying "distributed energy data integrated management technology," which connects power generation facilities dispersed across various idle sites into a single intelligent system.
Furthermore, the company plans to localize the microinverter—a core technology for project implementation—in cooperation with Data2Energy (CEO Han Sang-min). It is also expected to contribute to the stabilization of the power grid system through the real-time production, collection, analysis, and monitoring of vast amounts of distributed energy data. With the completion of the government approval process, KEPCO KDN plans to accelerate follow-up administrative procedures with the goal of completing solar power generation facilities in each local government next year. Furthermore, the company plans to pursue the expansion of diverse business models, including spreading the public-interest win-win model, which took its first steps in Jeonnam and Chungbuk, to local governments nationwide.
A KEPCO KDN official stated, "This government approval has established a solid foundation for KEPCO KDN's energy ICT technology to translate into tangible benefits for local residents," adding, "We will revitalize the distributed resource market through the successful operation of win-win SPCs in partnership with local governments and actively contribute to Jeonnam and Chungbuk becoming leading cities for future energy in Korea.“
