Paju City Hosts Climate Gap Forum Commemorating ‘Earth Day’

Discussion on Cognitive Response Strategies

The Paju City Council for Sustainable Development announced that it held the ‘2026 Climate Gap Forum Commemorating Earth Day’ on the 22nd at the multi-purpose room of the Paju Citizens’ Hall. Approximately 50 citizens attended the event to discuss measures to respond to the climate crisis.

Under the theme of ‘Gender-Sensitive Climate Crisis Response for a Sustainable Life,’ this forum was organized to seek effective response strategies at the local level, focusing on the fact that the climate crisis manifests differently across social strata. In the opening presentation, Lee An-so-young, Executive Director of the Korean Women’s Environmental Network, explained that the climate crisis has a close impact on women’s daily lives, including caregiving, health, and labor. She emphasized the need to expand the participation of social minorities in the policy-making process and strengthen inter-ministerial cooperation. Following her, Jang Yoon-sun, a research fellow at the Korean Women’s Development Institute, noted that experiences and perceptions of the climate crisis differ depending on gender, age, and life cycle. She suggested the need to approach the issue as a complex matter intertwined with the rise in single-person households, population aging, energy problems, and caregiving, and proposed strengthening community spirit and expanding the public nature of care services as solutions to bridge the climate gap.

During the comprehensive discussion, Secretary General Lee Ji-ho served as moderator, sharing issues regarding climate-vulnerable groups in the region, such as caregiving gaps during climate disasters like heatwaves and cold snaps, disparities in access to information, and difficulties faced by those with limited mobility.

Standing President Lee Seong-ryeol stated, “The climate crisis is an issue that threatens the very foundation of life, extending beyond the environment,” adding, “I hope this forum serves as a starting point for practical discussions to resolve the climate gap.”
