“Turning a couple’s daily life into a single space”… Lubble CEO Donghwan Kim

– 'Couple Space' started as a side project

– Evolving beyond a shared calendar into a service that designs relationships

There is a couple app started as a side project by a founder with no background in computer science. It is a service that goes beyond simple schedule sharing, emphasizing the concept of a 'space' where two people build their daily lives together. Donghwan Kim, the CEO of the couple app 'Lubble,' began his career as an electrical engineering engineer, then transitioned to a product designer after self-taught UX/UI design. Since then, he has planned and designed various services at startups. Currently, he runs Lubble as a two-person team with one developer.

Question about 'couple space'

Lubble started as a side project after work. CEO Kim and the co-founder were in a long-distance relationship and married, respectively, which naturally led to an interest in a "service for couples to use together."

There were many schedule sharing and memory recording apps, but when actually using them, many had complex features or struggled to capture sentiment.

He noted that existing services were fragmented based on specific functions. His concern was that while schedules, photos, and notes existed, they were not connected to "our daily lives." Lubble started from this point. The core idea was not to create a simple collection of functions, but to build "a single space" where couples could create and decorate their daily lives together.

Choosing the 'joy of creating' over a stable career

CEO Kim started his career as an engineer at a large corporation, but he came to ask himself a question.

“Will I be able to continue this work 10 or 20 years from now?”

The answer was not clear. He subsequently self-taught UX/UI design and moved to a startup, gaining experience in building and improving products firsthand.

It was really fun going through the process of the features I created reaching users, seeing their reactions, and improving them again.

Lubble was also an extension of that. It started as a side project, but as actual users began using the app and sending feedback, I became convinced.

I felt like I wanted to make this even better.

That choice eventually led to starting a business.

It's not about function, but creating a space just for the two of you.

The core of Lubble is not functionality, but 'experience design.' While the app includes standard features such as a calendar, countdowns, notes, and photo sharing, these functions do not exist separately. Instead, they are arranged as widgets within a single page created by the user, decorated with photos and stickers, and function as a single space.

We designed it so that the two of you can create the space the way you want, just like filling out a diary.

Each page can be customized by the couple themselves. It expands in the way they desire, such as a schedule-centered calendar page, a photo-focused album page, or a space highlighting countdowns. The goal is to create an experience where users reopen the app out of curiosity, wondering, "How has our space changed?", rather than simply visiting it when needed.

Users find decorating more difficult than expected.

'Free customization,' which was Lubble's biggest differentiator, actually became a barrier in the beginning.

Users seemed at a loss as to what to do and how to start.

The team accepted this as a key insight: that an "easy-to-get experience" is more important than good features. Currently, they are lowering the barrier to entry by introducing a template-based structure. Users can naturally create their own spaces on top of the basic structure. Onboarding is also being improved. The UX is being redesigned with a structure that allows users to understand by following along and trying things out themselves.

'Marketing' and 'Monetization'

CEO Kim's biggest concern right now is clear: marketing and monetization.

I strongly feel that delivering products well to those who need them is just as important as making good products.

Lubble has now introduced a subscription model. Rather than locking paid features, it offers elements that allow users to decorate their spaces more beautifully.

I wanted to create a structure where users naturally make choices when they feel the urge to decorate their space further.

However, this is also closely linked to the scale of the user base. Ultimately, his assessment is that growth and monetization are not separate issues.

Beyond shared calendars to a 'service that helps relationships'

Currently, Lubble's core function is the calendar. Schedule sharing and anniversary management are the main usage patterns. However, the company is envisioning a broader direction in the long term.

We want to be more than just an app for sharing schedules; we want to be a service that helps you maintain relationships better.

Romantic relationships extend beyond just schedules to include issues of emotion, interest, and communication. Lubble aims to address this through technology. Ultimately, the goal is to expand from an app that manages "what to do" into a service that helps with "how to get along better."

Small user experience is more important than certainty

CEO Kim emphasized 'small experiences' over certainty to those considering starting a business.

You don't have to try to be certain from the start. It is more important to start with a small project and observe user reactions.

He says that starting a business involves a longer 'time of endurance' than romance. And ultimately, it is the users who make it possible to endure that time.

“When you accumulate experiences where someone uses your product and comes back to you, that is when you gain the strength to move forward.”

It was also emphasized that the product is not made alone, but is completed together with the user.

Lubble, which started as an app to record the daily lives of couples, is now preparing to expand into a service that deals with 'relationships'. Attention is focused on what forms of 'connection' this service, which began as a small side project and is growing alongside its users, will create in the future.

Lubble CEO Donghwan Kim

CEO Kim

CEO Kim
