Chungju City Youth Independence Support Center Launches Emotional Support Project Connecting Independent Youth with Local Adults
Operation of Mentor-Mentee Program ‘Gideul-eondeok’
The Chungju City Youth Independence Support Center has created a meaningful event to provide a reliable emotional support system for local youth preparing for independence.
From the 21st to the 22nd, the Chungju City Youth Independence Support Center conducted the two-day, one-night mentor-mentee program ‘Gideul-eondeok’ to help youth preparing for independence achieve emotional stability and form social support networks. This program was launched to provide a healthy safety net where youth facing various difficulties in the process of becoming independent—such as housing, finances, and career paths—can share their concerns and seek advice.
‘Gideul-eondeok’ is a project that connects youth with adult mentors from the local community who have completed prior training, supporting continuous interaction rather than a one-time event. A total of 13 participants, including mentors and mentees, took part in this event. They built intimacy through a variety of outdoor activities, starting with a bicycle tour of Chungju Jungangtap, followed by canoeing, camping at Mokgye Market, and trekking on Binaeseom Island. In particular, participants naturally bonded while setting up tents and preparing meals in pairs, and established a deep relationship of trust by sharing their innermost thoughts during the evening campfire.
One youth participating in the program shared their thoughts, stating that unlike the awkwardness at the beginning, they were able to comfortably open up while participating in various activities together. They added that having a reliable adult they can contact and rely on at any time provides great comfort. A mentor who volunteered also pledged to continue supporting the mentee's journey toward independence, stating that rather than offering specific answers, they wish to be an adult the youth can comfortably lean on whenever they are struggling.
An official from the Chungju Youth Independence Support Center stated that what youth preparing for independence need most is someone who listens to their stories and stands by their side. They further announced that they will continue to cooperate with the local community to strengthen the social safety net, ensuring that youth can feel secure and rely on them. Meanwhile, the Chungju Youth Independence Support Center, the first dedicated institution for youth independence support in North Chungcheong Province, provides multifaceted integrated services for youth preparing for independence, including case management and support for independence and emotional well-being.
