Changnyeong County Holds 11th Upo Crested Ibis Wild Release
A Total of 50 Released into Nature… Achieved Success in Breeding 3rd Generation in the Wild for the First Time in 6 Years
Changnyeong County announced that it held the "11th Upo Crested Ibis Wild Release" at the Upo Crested Ibis Restoration Center within Upo Wetland on the 6th.
The event was held under the theme "Crested Ibis, the Hope of the Ecosystem Soaring Again." Officials from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the National Heritage Administration, and Gyeongsangnam-do Province, along with members of the Upo Wetland Crested Ibis Restoration Supporters Association and local residents, attended to pray for the successful settlement of the crested ibises in the wild.
A total of 50 crested ibises were released on this day. Of these, 15 were released into the wild on-site using the induced release method, while the remaining 35 were released using the collective release method, where the enclosure gates were opened to allow them to enter the wild on their own. The released individuals are healthy birds that have completed wild survival training, including flight training, human adaptation training, and hunting loaches. Of these, GPS trackers have been attached to 20 birds to continuously monitor their movement paths and survival status.
Since the first release in 2019, Changnyeong County has released a total of 440 crested ibises into the wild up to this year, and last year achieved the success of confirming the breeding of the third generation of wild-born crested ibises.
Sim Sang-cheol, Acting Governor of Changnyeong County, stated, "I hope that the crested ibises returning to the wild will go beyond being a symbol of Changnyeong, an ecological city where humans and nature coexist, to become beings that convey hope to the people."
