South Jeolla Province Activates Emergency Infectious Disease Control System for Summer… 24-Hour Response for 5 Months Starting May
Preparing for Rising Temperatures and Increased Outdoor Activities… All-Out Effort to Block the Spread of Waterborne and Foodborne Diseases - Operating Epidemiological Investigation Teams and Maintaining a Rapid Reporting System in Cooperation with 22 Cities and Counties
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province will fully activate its ‘Summer Infectious Disease Emergency Control System’ from May 1 to September 30 to prepare for outbreaks of waterborne and foodborne infectious diseases caused by rising temperatures and increased outdoor activities.
Summer is a time when pathogenic microorganisms proliferate actively due to rising temperatures. In particular, as the risk of cluster outbreaks of infectious diseases increases due to the rise in group activities such as vacation seasons and various local events, South Jeolla Province plans to implement preemptive disease control management.
Accordingly, Jeonnam Province has established a close cooperative network with the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) and 22 city and county public health centers, and has completed preparations to enable an immediate response in the event of an infectious disease outbreak by maintaining a 24-hour emergency contact system.
In addition, the province plans to prevent the spread to the local community in its early stages by organizing epidemiological investigation teams in each city and county to be immediately deployed to the scene upon the occurrence of a suspected patient, and by utilizing the Integrated Disease and Health Management System to share the situation in real time.
Waterborne and foodborne infectious diseases are illnesses caused by the consumption of contaminated water or food, resulting in symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. If similar symptoms appear in two or more people who have consumed the same food, it must be reported to the nearest public health center without delay.
Recommended key guidelines for preventing infectious diseases include: washing hands under running water for at least 30 seconds; cooking food thoroughly; boiling water before drinking; washing vegetables and fruits in clean water before consumption; and refraining from cooking if symptoms of diarrhea are present. Jeong Gwang-seon, Director of the Health and Welfare Bureau of Jeollanam-do, stated, “Prevention and early response are paramount for summer infectious diseases,” and urged the public to “report suspected symptoms, such as mass diarrhea, to the public health center immediately and strictly adhere to personal hygiene rules, including washing hands and cooking food thoroughly.”
