South Jeolla Province Holds 46th Anniversary May 18 Commemoration Ceremony… “Urging Inclusion of the May Spirit in the Preamble of the Constitution”

Governor Kim Young-rok: “Gwangju’s May is Jeonnam’s May… We Will Achieve Greater Prosperity as a Unified Special City” Approximately 400 Residents Attend… Commemorating the Spirits of May by Singing ‘March for the Beloved’

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = On the 15th, South Jeolla Province held the ‘46th Anniversary May 18 Democratization Movement Commemoration Ceremony’ at the plaza in front of the Kim Young-rang Gate of the Provincial Office (in front of the signboard of the former South Jeolla Provincial Office), pledging to inherit the May spirit of democracy, human rights, and peace. Held under the slogan "Flowers of May, Light of Today," the commemorative ceremony was attended by approximately 400 people, including South Jeolla Province Governor Kim Young-rok, South Jeolla Provincial Council Chairman Kim Tae-kyun, Acting Superintendent of Education Hwang Seong-hwan, National Assembly members Kim Won-i, Moon Geum-ju, Seo Mi-hwa, and Jeon Jong-deok, Yang Kwan-seok, Chairman of the Jeonnam 5·18 Commemorative Event Committee, representatives of May organizations, students, and provincial residents, who paid tribute to the spirits of the martyrs of May.

In his memorial address, Governor Kim Young-rok reminded the audience of the noble sacrifice and dedication of the residents of South Jeolla Province who shared the fate of Gwangju in 1980. Governor Kim emphasized, "In May 1980, the residents of South Jeolla Province rushed to the scene, enraged by the massacre and atrocities in Gwangju, even though they knew they would not return alive," adding, "May in Gwangju was May in South Jeolla, and it was May for all of us."

In particular, Governor Kim expressed strong regret that discussions to include the spirit of the May 18 Uprising in the Preamble of the Constitution failed to bear fruit in the National Assembly. He lamented, “A priceless opportunity, which came 39 years after the 1987 constitutional amendment, was thwarted without even a vote taking place in the National Assembly,” adding, “We cannot help but ask if this means May 18 is merely a tool for political strife.”

He continued, “History will clearly record whose name will be stained by going against the flow of the times,” and urged the residents of the province to “join forces to the very end to enshrine the spirit of May in the Constitution, the supreme norm of the Republic of Korea.”

Furthermore, Governor Kim mentioned the ‘Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City,’ which is scheduled to launch on July 1, and reaffirmed that the two regions are a historical and living community. Governor Kim expressed his future aspirations, stating, “Jeonnam is a land that endured May as one with Gwangju,” and adding, “Just as the spirit of May became the root of democracy in the Republic of Korea, we will advance our history toward a path of greater prosperity through unity.”

The commemorative ceremony on this day sublimated the sacrifices of May 1980 into a light of hope and solidarity through the total drama “May Left by a Boy, Becoming a Flower and a Light” performed by the theater group Yechangjak Daham. The event concluded solemnly with all attendees singing “March for the Beloved” in unison.

Meanwhile, Jeonnam Province will continue to hold various events in addition to the ceremony to inherit and spread the spirit of May. Events scheduled to take place throughout the province include the “Namdo May Cultural Festival” held at Bitgaram Lake Park in Naju on the 16th, as well as 5·18 concerts, a photography contest, and historical tours for democratic citizens.
