South Jeolla Province Selects 4 Projects for 2027 Fishing Village Development Project… Secures Total of 19.8 Billion Won

Selection of Hub Development in Jindo, Wando, and Sinan, and Capacity Building in Jangheung; Accelerating Efforts to Create Livable Fishing Villages

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province has achieved a remarkable feat by securing 19.8 billion won in project funding after a total of four projects were finally selected in the ‘2027 General Rural and Fishing Village Development Project’ competition organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

In this competition, three locations—Yongdeung in Jindo, Cheongsan-dong in Wando, and Hanun in Ja-eun, Sinan—were selected in the regional hub development project category, while Jangheung-gun was named in the city/county capacity building project category.

The General Rural and Fishing Village Development Project in the fishing village sector is a public competition program organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to improve the quality of life for fishing village residents and expand their income bases; it is characterized by residents' direct participation in project planning and implementation. Jeonnam Province attributes this achievement primarily to the establishment of a close cooperative system with each city, county, and resident steering committee from the initial stages of the application process, which enabled the formulation of differentiated, customized project plans tailored to local characteristics.

The selected regions will begin full-scale projects starting in 2027 to build customized infrastructure that highlights their unique regional features.

Jindo Yongdeung Area: A new "Yongdeung Ara Center" will be constructed in the Imhoe-myeon area to serve as a core hub for fishing village culture and education. Additionally, plans include transforming existing aging village halls and fishermen's halls into "advanced fishing village living spaces" to significantly expand comfortable residential areas for residents.

Wando Cheongsan-dong Area will focus on enhancing the living convenience of island residents. It will establish "Cheongsan Eoulmaru" and "Cheongsan Badamaru" as core hubs for residents' culture and welfare, and will neatly renovate neglected, idle infrastructure within the area. The Hanun area in Ja-eun, Sinan, will construct a sports park for the health and welfare of residents and promote the complex remodeling of aging communal living facilities, such as senior centers and public baths. In addition, it will meticulously maintain living safety infrastructure, including drainage systems and village roads, to create a safe village environment.

Jangheung-gun (City/County Capacity Building) will provide full support for fostering resident-led learning organizations and village clubs. Through this, it plans to help revitalize the community and solidly establish a foundation for the self-reliance of sustainable fishing communities.

This project is being implemented in two main categories: 'Regional Hub Development' and 'City/County Capacity Building.' Regional Hub Development aims to raise basic living standards and improve settlement conditions by expanding social infrastructure (SOC) in central fishing villages. On the other hand, the City/County Capacity Building project is a software-oriented initiative designed to promote the sustainable growth of fishing communities through resident-led organizational operations and support for self-reliance.
