Eumseong’s ‘Bonghakgol Garden’ Officially Registered as Chungbuk’s First Local Garden

Bonghakgol Garden, a pristine forest resource in Eumseong-gun, has been reborn as Chungbuk’s first officially recognized local garden.

Eumseong-gun announced that Bonghakgol Garden, spanning 104,167 square meters, was officially registered as Chungcheongbuk-do’s first local garden as of the 7th. This marks the first time a site within Chungbuk Province has received formal approval as a local garden.

A local garden is a public green space created and operated directly by a local government. This registration holds great significance as it officially recognizes the value of the garden as the only officially designated garden in the Chungbuk region.

Constructed in the Yongsan-ri area of Eumseong-eup with a total project cost of 10.5 billion won, Bonghakgol Garden features a harmonious blend of approximately 330,000 plants of 158 different species, including over 12,000 landscaping trees such as pine trees and yellow plum blossoms, as well as over 320,000 ground cover and herbaceous plants like pink muhly. Centered around the Wildflower Garden and Wish Garden, the garden presents diverse landscaping beauty through 11 organically connected themes, including the Event Garden, Rose of Sharon Garden, Korean Style Garden, Four Seasons Garden, Rest Garden, Wetland Garden, Kitchen Garden, Pink Muhly Garden, and Ecology Garden. In addition, it is equipped with an off-street parking lot, visitor rest areas, lawn stands, and ground fountains, and has enhanced visitor convenience by creating themed walking trails that connect to the nearby forest bathing area and forest roads.

This achievement is the fruit of over nine years of systematic effort, following phased administrative procedures since 2017. The county secured 3 billion won in state funding in 2017 and completed preliminary procedures, such as land compensation and small-scale environmental impact assessments, by 2019. Construction, which began in May 2020, was completed in December 2023, followed by supplementary work to enhance the overall quality. Last year, a relevant ordinance was enacted to legislate the management framework, and final approval was granted following a registration application in May of this year.

Using this registration as a stepping stone, the county plans to further expand Bonghakgol Garden. Inside the garden, a 3,000-square-meter indoor wooden garden accessible year-round and a Food Plus Center—a dining space utilizing local specialties—will be constructed. Furthermore, the county intends to develop the site into a hub for stay-type tourism that integrates ecological appreciation, dynamic leisure activities, and gourmet dining by linking it with the nearby Forest Leisure Sports Complex currently under construction.

Eumseong County Governor Jo Byeong-ok stated that the registration as North Chungcheong Province's first local garden is a valuable achievement born from the combined efforts of residents and public officials, and serves as an important starting point for ushering in an era of garden tourism. He added that the county will continue to develop the local garden along with the wooden botanical garden, Food Plus Center, and Forest Leisure Sports Complex to cultivate the area into a space that further enriches the daily lives of its citizens.
