Yeongdong Middle School Students Embrace Traditional Culture at Gugak Experience Village… Leading the Globalization of Gugak in the U.S.
Youth from the Yeongdong region held a special time of communication to realize the value of our traditional music and grow into global cultural leaders who will promote it to the world. Thirty middle school students from the district, selected for the "Yeongdong Gugak and Culture Global Leader Training Project" promoted by the Yeongdong Office of Education, visited the Nangye Traditional Musical Instrument Production Village and the Gugak Experience Village on the 16th to participate in in-depth traditional Gugak culture experience programs. This event was organized to instill cultural pride and strengthen global capabilities by directly showcasing the region's proud Gugak assets to students, who are the future leaders.
The students participating in the program received vivid on-site instruction from Instrument Master Park Seong-gi of the String Instrument Workshop at the Nangye Traditional Musical Instrument Production Village and Instrument Master Kang Geum-sik of Chogang Traditional Musical Instruments. The students systematically learned about the history of Gugak, the great achievements of Nangye Park Yeon—the "Father" of Gugak—as well as the compilation process of Gugak and the historical role of the Nangye Traditional Musical Instrument Production Village in Yeongdong-gun. Following this, the students spent a meaningful time experiencing Korean traditional music with all their senses outside of textbooks by personally crafting miniature versions of instruments such as the gayageum, geomungo, and janggu, and playing "Arirang," a song imbued with the spirit of the Korean people.
The schedule concluded with a viewing of a regular performance by the Nangye Traditional Music Ensemble. Watching the spectacular and profound traditional music performance unfold before their eyes, the students were deeply captivated by the unique charm and cultural prowess of Korean traditional music. Having successfully completed this experience, the middle school students plan to travel to the United States as part of a future project to act as civilian diplomats, introducing traditional culture directly to locals.
Warm support from the local community also followed to cheer on the students' meaningful overseas journey. Kang Geum-sik, Chairman of the Nangye Traditional Music Promotion Association, readily donated one geomungo and one janggu to the Yeongdong Office of Education to help the students promote Korean culture abroad and express their gratitude. The Yeongdong Office of Education and the students participating in the project plan to deliver the sponsored traditional Korean musical instruments as gifts to the locals during their upcoming visit to the United States, while also taking the lead in spreading the teacher's noble spirit of traditional Korean music and the charms of the Yeongdong Nangye Traditional Music Experience Village to the global market.
