[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 양산시는 24일 세계유산 통도사 내 문화공간 건립 사업의 기공식을 개최하고 본격적인 사업 추진에 들어갔다.

통도사는 국보인 대웅전과 금강계단을 보유한 우리나라 대표 사찰이자 세계유산 지정되면서 해마다 내외국인 관람객이 증가하고 있는 세계문화명소이다.

최근 방문객 증가로 인해 사찰 내 공간 활용에 대한 개선 필요성이 지속적으로 제기돼 왔으며, 유네스코 역시 순례공간과 문화휴게공간의 분리를 권고한 바 있다.

이에 양산시는 통도사와 협력해 세계유산의 보존 가치를 높이고 쾌적한 관람 환경을 조성하기 위해 순례공간과 문화휴게공간을 분리하고, 이를 뒷받침할 문화공간 및 기반시설을 조성하는 사업으로 제2주차장 인근에 지상2층 규모의 편의시설(사찰음식점 및 불교용품 판매점) 및 제4주차장 인근에는 지하1층~지상1층 규모의 문화시설(불교도서관 및 전시실)을 추진하게 됐다.

이번 문화공간 건립을 통해 방문객의 동선을 체계적으로 분리함으로써 사찰 고유의 수행 환경을 보호하고, 동시에 방문객에게는 보다 질 높은 문화·휴식 공간을 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

양산시 관계자는 “이번 사업은 세계유산 통도사의 지속가능한 보전과 활용을 위한 중요한 전환점”이라며 “앞으로도 지역의 역사·문화 자산을 적극적으로 보존하고, 이를 기반으로 관광 활성화와 지역경제 발전을 함께 이끌어 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
