Song Hyeong-gon, Chairman of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan Council: "We Will Develop Agriculture and Fisheries into a Lifestyle Industry Comparable to Semiconductors"
Attended 'Forum on the Great Transformation of Agriculture to Create Future Food Sources'... "Will Not Abandon Fundamental Industries; Will Support the Establishment of a Distribution System to Ensure Fair Prices"
(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Song Hyeong-gon, Chairman of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan Council, expressed his strong commitment to actively support securing future growth engines for agriculture and fisheries and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation between Jeonnam and Gwangju.
On the 15th, Chairman Song attended the 'Forum on the Great Transformation of Agriculture to Create Future Food Sources,' held at the main auditorium of the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) headquarters to commemorate the launch of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City. He spent a meaningful time exploring the future development direction of the local agriculture, fisheries, and livestock industries. This forum, organized by the Special Committee on Agricultural Transformation under the Special Planning Committee for Great Transformation, was prepared to present future growth strategies that can maximize synergy for the integrated special city by combining Jeonnam’s abundant production base in agriculture, forestry, livestock, and fisheries with Gwangju’s advanced R&D and distribution and consumption infrastructure.
The event was attended by over 100 people, demonstrating keen interest. These included Min Hyung-bae, Mayor of the Integrated Special City of Jeonnam-Gwangju; Ryu Ki-joon, Chairman of the Agriculture and Fisheries Committee of the Integrated Special City Council; heads of agricultural, fisheries, and livestock cooperatives; and representatives of agricultural and fisheries organizations.
In his congratulatory remarks, Chairman Song Hyung-gon expressed deep empathy for the voices of farmers and fishermen who feel alienated amidst the recent policy trend focused on high-tech industries. Chairman Song emphasized, “I am well aware of the concerns that agriculture and fisheries might be overshadowed by the semiconductor industry issues.” He continued, “However, agriculture and fisheries are the most primal and fundamental industries that have existed alongside humanity since its inception, and the Integrated Special City of Jeonnam-Gwangju holds the firm fundamental principle that we can never, and must never, abandon these fundamental industries.”
Chairman Song further stated, “Now is the time to make a major transformation to elevate the value of agriculture and fisheries so that farmers and fishermen can engage in their livelihoods with peace of mind and receive fair prices for their production.” He pledged, “Our Integrated Special City Council will remain a steadfast partner until the end to ensure that agriculture and fisheries become industries that receive far more attention than they do now, and furthermore, leap forward as future life industries comparable to semiconductors.”
Meanwhile, at the forum held on this day, experts from academia and related institutions participated in presentations proposing innovation strategies for agriculture and fisheries. Song Won-kyu, member of the Presidential Special Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries; Lee Su-haeng, former senior research fellow at the Gyeonggi Research Institute; Jung Young-hee, professor at Chonnam National University; and Shim Hwa-seop, head of the Export Strategy Department at the Korea Agro-Fisheries Food Trade Corporation (aT), served as presenters and engaged in in-depth discussions on building a sustainable agro-fisheries ecosystem and measures to revitalize exports.
