West Sea Regional Coast Guard Headquarters Goes ‘All-Out’ to Block Smuggling and Illegal Entry During Foggy Season… Intensive Prevention Activities Begin in May
Operation of Special Security Forecasting System for High-Risk Areas and Joint Inspections with Related Agencies to be Conducted for 4 Months Until August - Promotional Campaigns and Urging Reporting Among Maritime Workers to Block Maritime Border Crimes at the Source
(Mokpo = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The West Sea Regional Coast Guard Headquarters is launching comprehensive prevention activities to block smuggling and illegal entry via the sea as the foggy season, characterized by frequent sea fog, begins.
The West Sea Regional Coast Guard Headquarters announced on the 28th that it will conduct ‘intensive prevention activities against smuggling and illegal entry’ for four months, from May 1 to August 31. This measure was prepared to preemptively block the possibility of border crimes that take advantage of periods when weather conditions become milder.
Based on an analysis of illegal immigration cases (2 incidents, 10 arrests) that occurred within its jurisdiction over the past five years, the West Sea Coast Guard Headquarters determined that the likelihood of such crimes is high between May and August, a period characterized by favorable maritime weather conditions and frequent fog.
Accordingly, a "Special Security Forecast for Illegal Immigration" is issued when weather conditions predicting illegal entry—such as waves within 1 meter and outdoor temperatures exceeding 10°C—are established. Once the forecast is issued, thorough inspections and blockades of suspicious vessels are intensified, centering on "Priority Security Zones" designated based on public security needs.
To ensure effective enforcement, the Coast Guard plans to conduct joint inspections of vulnerable areas with relevant agencies, including the military, while also solidifying its civilian cooperation system by distributing promotional materials encouraging maritime workers to report border crimes. Jeong Wook-han, Head of the Information and Foreign Affairs Division at the West Sea Coast Guard Headquarters, emphasized, “We plan to continuously carry out intensive preventive activities to block maritime border crimes at the source,” and urged, “If you spot a vessel suspected of smuggling or illegal entry, please report it immediately to the nearest Coast Guard station.”
