“Business decisions are made in the field, not at a desk”… Rakuten Symphony Korea CEO Son Seung-hyun’s future business experiment

Business is ultimately a survival game.

In the interview with Son Seung-hyun, CEO of Rakuten Symphony Korea, the word that appeared most frequently was 'survival.' Rather than grandiose visions or declarations, what came first were speed, execution, and the market.

He is an executive at a global conglomerate who has simultaneously experienced founding and exiting a startup. Perhaps for this reason, the interview was imbued more deeply with the tension characteristic of an entrepreneur still standing in the heart of the market, rather than that of a stable corporate executive.

CEO Son described Rakuten Symphony Korea not merely as a Korean branch, but as an organization "like a commando and a doctor within the group." This means it is an execution organization that enters business sites where problems arise to realign the course and connects on-site issues to new business ventures.

In fact, Rakuten Symphony Korea did not merely remain in the role of executing the headquarters' strategy. It has established a structure that directly identifies problems within the Korean market, creates new businesses, and connects them to global operations.

What he repeatedly emphasized was ultimately the same story.

Business decisions are made in the field, not at a desk.

Son Seung-hyun, CEO of Rakuten Symphony Korea

Korea is the fastest market to verify the future

CEO Son described the Korean market not merely as a regional hub, but as a 'real-world testing ground' for global technology and services.

He remarked, “Korea is one of the fastest countries to adopt new technologies and translate them into actual services,” adding that “the level of its development workforce and execution speed are also among the best in the world.”

In fact, Rakuten Symphony Korea's main business, ship cybersecurity 'Rakuten Maritime,' also originated in the Korean shipbuilding industry. The same is true for 'Rakuten Neo,' its unmanned store and space automation business.

What is interesting is that neither business was started at the direction of headquarters. CEO Son explained, “They were businesses that the team members built themselves from the ground up after discovering problems in the field.”

He emphasized that this is Rakuten Symphony Korea's greatest competitive advantage. He stated that it is not merely an organization that executes global strategies, but an action-oriented organization that directly identifies and validates new business opportunities within the Korean market.

In particular, he highly valued the rapid feedback structure of the Korean market. He explained that because users respond quickly and demand for service improvement is high, it is actually suitable to serve as an initial testbed for global business.

Services that have passed in Korea are highly likely to become competitive globally.

Son Seung-hyun, CEO of Rakuten Symphony Korea, described the Korean market as “a stage where global technology and services can be tested most quickly.”

Perfectionism delays the collapse of startups.

The most impressive part of the interview was the way CEO Son explained 'speed.' He pointed out that many startups and development organizations are overly obsessed with perfection.

“Many people believe that if a product is perfect, customers will definitely buy it. However, there are very many cases where this leads to wasting time and energy while missing out on market response.”

CEO Son stated that organizations that enter the market quickly and gauge customer reactions first actually survive longer. The logic is that rapidly identifying failure and quickly deciding on the direction for correction ultimately increases the probability of survival.

If you prioritize speed, you can gauge market reaction quickly. It also makes decisions much faster on whether to push forward or adjust direction.

This philosophy is also reflected in 'Odyssey-X,' a startup program operated by Rakuten Symphony Korea. He defined this program not as a simple competition, but as a "real-world validation program." He explained that the core of the program lies in the process itself: meeting actual customers, experiencing market reactions, and refining the direction of the service.

CEO Son said, “Businesses are more likely to collapse from exhaustion during the execution process than to fail due to a bad idea.”

He also cited a "lack of global vision" as the biggest weakness of the Korean startup ecosystem. He noted that while technology and execution capabilities are already world-class, many companies still remain stuck in a domestic market-centric mindset.

“Now, we must think in terms of the global market from the very beginning. A company that only succeeds within Korea will inevitably face clear limitations.”

The discussion regarding government support programs was also realistic. CEO Son stated, “Government support itself clearly played a positive role,” but added, “There were quite a few cases where, at some point, being selected for a support program became the goal itself.”

In the end, the story was that the market is cold, and the experience of surviving itself is the greatest asset.

CEO Son, who has experience at both global conglomerates and startups, said, “What is more important than perfection is the ability to execute and enter the market first.”

Representative Son repeated the same words at the end of the interview.

Business is ultimately about the real thing.

To him, a startup was not a competition of flashy ideas, but rather a process of enduring and surviving within the market until the very end. He believed that rapid execution was more important than a perfect strategy, that a team that had rolled around together was more important than individual skills, and that, above all, the experience of meeting actual customers in the market was the most important.

Although it was an interview with the CEO of a global conglomerate, what lingered most strongly until the very end was the 'sense of reality.' These were stories that only someone who has survived could tell.
