Min Hyung-bae, Mayor-elect of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju City: “Citizens Will Lead Culture, Tourism, and Sports, and the Administration Will Support Them”

The Jeonnam-Gwangju Transformation Planning Committee Holds Second Event, ‘Citizen Min Hyung-bae Listens to the Special City Citizens’ – Listening to Visions and On-site Goals for Culture, Tourism, and Sports, Including the Southwest Convention, Gourmet Platform, and K-Culture

(Break News Gwangju·Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The culture, tourism, and sports policies of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City are expected to become more concrete based on citizen participation.

The Jeonnam-Gwangju Transformation Planning Committee announced that it held the second event, ‘Citizen Min Hyung-bae Listens to the Special City Citizens,’ on the 22nd at the auditorium of Dongshin University Korean Medicine Hospital in Naju, under the theme ‘Adding Sovereignty to Citizens’ Imagination.’

This event was organized to discuss policy directions in the culture, tourism, and sports sectors with citizens ahead of the launch of the Integrated Special City. Approximately 300 people attended the event, demonstrating keen interest. Attendees included Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor-elect of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City; Jeong Eun-seung, Chairman of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Transformation Planning Committee; and Hwang Pung-nyeon, Chairman of the Culture and Tourism Committee, as well as officials from the culture, arts, tourism, and sports sectors and citizens. In particular, Mayor-elect Min drew attention for his "listening-centered" approach, notably by boldly omitting his opening remarks to maximize speaking time for the citizens.

The citizens and experts present candidly shared on-site difficulties while pouring out various ideas for utilizing local cultural assets, upgrading the tourism industry, and expanding sports infrastructure. Specifically, proposals vividly capturing the voices from the field continued, including: resolving the lack of an international convention center in the Southwest region; establishing a gastronomic culture platform; linking sports events with tourism and local commercial districts; branding public art; and expanding technical personnel for public theaters. In the subsequent keynote address, Culture and Tourism Committee Chairman Hwang Pung-nyeon defined the core assets of Jeonnam-Gwangju as "the sea, May, and technology," and presented future visions for each sector based on these elements.

Chairman Hwang put forward the following blueprints for the "New Jeonnam-Gwangju": ▲ "The Cultural Capital of Korea, where memories bloom and people shine" in the culture sector; ▲ "A Global Stay-Type Tourism Capital, where AI and K-Culture meet the sea and islands" in the tourism sector; and ▲ "A 365-Day Sports Special City, sought after by the world and enjoyed by citizens" in the athletics sector.

In response, attendees discussed multifaceted development plans, including bridging the cultural gap between regions, strengthening the creative foundation for artists, revitalizing tourism along the southern coast and islands, expanding accessibility to recreational sports, fostering the sports industry, and supporting young artists.

Representative-elect Min Hyung-bae expressed a strong determination to completely overhaul the administration. Mayor-elect Min emphasized, “I will change the way the administration of the Integrated Special City works, starting with the way it operates. Upon taking office, I will send all public officials to the field,” adding, “The collective intelligence accumulated by the citizens of the Special City across various fields is the Integrated Special City’s most valuable asset.”

He continued, “The fields of culture, tourism, and sports are also not areas that the administration should unilaterally lead or control,” stating, “Since those working on the front lines know the reality best, I will completely overhaul these sectors in a way that allows citizens and experts to take the lead while the administration fully supports them.”
