Danyang County Expands Support for Early Open-Field Watermelon Cultivation to Boost Farm Income

Expansion to 21 Sites and 24 Hectares... Expected to Strengthen Competitiveness by Securing the Market

Danyang County is significantly expanding its support program for early open-field watermelon cultivation to strengthen farm competitiveness and improve income by enabling earlier shipments compared to standard open-field watermelons.

According to the county, the "Early Open-Field Watermelon Cultivation Support Program" is designed to enhance market competitiveness by accelerating watermelon growth through non-woven fabric tunnel cultivation and controlling the timing of shipments.

The program aims to help farmers secure price competitiveness and establish stable sales channels by supporting stable initial growth through early planting and enabling shipments earlier than standard open-field watermelons.

In particular, this program offers a significant market preemption effect as it allows farmers to target the market gap between the shipment of greenhouse watermelons and the full-scale shipment of standard open-field watermelons.

Participating farmers can enhance cultivation stability by enabling harvests before the rainy season, and it is expected to contribute to income improvement by securing a shipment timing that is more favorable than standard cultivation. The scale of this year's project has expanded significantly compared to last year.

The project, which covered 8.7 hectares across 8 locations last year, has grown to 21 locations covering 24 hectares this year, resulting in a substantial increase in both the number of participating farms and the cultivated area.

The total project budget has also been expanded from 43.5 million won last year to 93.52 million won this year, further strengthening support for farmers.

Eligibility is limited to farms cultivating at least 0.1 hectares of watermelons based on agricultural business entity registration standards, and the county provides non-woven fabric and support poles necessary for early cultivation.

Given the recent increase in weather variability—including abnormal spring temperatures, frost, and large diurnal temperature variations—the county believes that non-woven fabric tunnel cultivation will be effective in reducing damage from early low temperatures and creating a stable growing environment.

The county explains that this support measure provides practical assistance for stabilizing farm management while simultaneously responding to changing climate conditions. Park Jong-yoon, Director of the Danyang County Agricultural Technology Center, stated, “The early open-field watermelon cultivation support project is highly significant in enhancing farmers’ competitiveness and income by targeting the market gap between the shipment of greenhouse watermelons and the shipment of regular open-field watermelons.” He added, “As we have expanded the scale of the project to reflect high demand in the field, we will continue to expand customized support that farmers can truly benefit from.”
