On September 5, 2026, the Global Poetry Reading Society held a preliminary meeting to prepare for two performances to be held in Madagascar. This meeting was an important occasion held ahead of the performances in Antanarivo on October 3 and at Baobab Avenue in Morondava on October 7.
The gathering was attended by members of the Global Poetry Reading Society and 12 participants for the Madagascar performances, as well as Somsanit, a Korean language professor at Souphanouvong University in Laos; Manipa and Watsana, representatives of the Korean Language Department; Eden from Israel; poet Lola from Tajikistan; Irma, Lucien, Emilia, and Rosalina from Madagascar; and Lee Kyung-soo, the representative of Bonjuk Madagascar. They shared their cultures and literary passions with one another.
Performers of the gayageum, haegeum, vocal music, traditional singing, and poetry recitation conducted a thorough full rehearsal in preparation for the performances. The three hosts—Kim Jae-joong, Lim Young-sook, and Jung Jong-hwa—meticulously coordinated their scripts and enhanced the quality of the performance by practicing in an environment identical to an actual stage. In particular, they conducted multiple simulations to synchronize the flow and rhythm of the script and to bring the live atmosphere to life.
This performance is the product of cultural and artistic exchange connecting Korea and Madagascar, and it is expected to serve as a bridge connecting hearts through the language and poetry of multinational poets. The attendees agreed to cooperate closely on the publication of the translated poetry collection and the preparation of the performance, drawing on their respective languages and experiences.
Oh Chung, President of the Global Poetry Reading Association, stated, "I hope that through this event, not only the beauty of Korean poetry but also diverse cultures and arts will come together to promote friendship and understanding among global citizens." Additionally, Professor Somsanith of the Korean Language Department at Souphanovong University in Laos emphasized, "This exchange, mediated by language and poetry, will serve as an important opportunity for the younger generation to build cultural bridges, and I congratulate the performance in Madagascar."
Moving forward, the Global Poetry Reading Association plans to continue its efforts toward the globalization of Korean literature by opening up new possibilities in the fields of poetry recitation, translation, and performance through continuous collaboration with multicultural artists.
Participating poet Kang Min-sook stated, “This performance and the work of translating poetry collections go beyond mere literary activities; they serve as a bridge that connects different cultures and languages through the heart. It is deeply meaningful and an honor to have the opportunity to make the voices of our poets known to the world by translating and reciting Korean poetry.”
In this way, the performance team and the poets are completing the performance through close cooperation in their respective roles. The passion and effort to share the beauty of Korean poetry with the world are coming together to further illuminate the significance of this event, which is why the performance is so highly anticipated.
