People Power Party Gwangju Chapter Confirms Local Election Candidates and Launches Campaign Committee in Full Swing

"Judgment on the Democratic Party Begins in Honam"... Reorganizing Campaign Lineup Including Candidate Lee Jung-hyun for Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Mayor

Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = With the 9th nationwide simultaneous local elections just over a month away, the People Power Party's Gwangju Chapter has finalized candidate nominations and entered full-scale election mode.

The People Power Party's Gwangju Chapter announced via a press release on the 4th that it has finalized candidates for the Mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, as well as for National Assembly members and city and district council members. The chapter stated, "We plan to fully launch the Election Campaign Committee to establish ourselves as a substantive alternative party to the Democratic Party in Gwangju and Jeonnam."

Acting Chairman Hong Woo-seok unleashed sharp criticism against the opposition bloc in a message on the same day. Acting Chairman Hong pointed out, "With the June 3 local elections imminent, the Democratic Party is pushing for a special prosecutor to drop charges, following the Special Committee for State Affairs Investigation, in order to cover up criminal allegations against President Lee Jae-myung."

He continued, "This is an act that directly violates the fundamental principle of judicial justice that 'no one can be a judge in their own trial,'" characterizing the Democratic Party's behavior as "outrageous" and strongly criticizing it.

Acting Chairman Hong particularly emphasized the need for change in the Honam region, appealing for support by stating, "To judge the Democratic Party and the Lee Jae-myung administration, a wind of change must blow from Honam, the very heart of the region," and adding, "Gathering your precious vote for the People Power Party is the only way."

Former National Assembly member Lee Jung-hyun has been confirmed as the candidate for the Mayor of the unified Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City, a key position in this election. This is interpreted as a strategy to engage in a head-on battle for the leadership of the unified city by fielding a heavyweight figure.

The lineup of candidates for the concurrent by-elections and local elections has also been finalized.

▲ National Assembly Candidate for Gwangsan-gu (Eul): Ahn Tae-wook, former Chairman of the Gwangju City Party Committee

▲ Candidate for Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated City Council (Buk-gu District 1): Yang Hye-ryeong, former Gwangju City Council member

▲ Proportional Representation Candidates for Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated City Council: Lee O-sook, Chairwoman of the Jeonnam Provincial Party Women's Committee; Kim Soon-ok, Spokesperson for the Gwangju City Party Committee; and Chae Myeong-hee, Standing Representative of the Honam Alternative Forum

▲ Candidate for Gwangsan-gu (Da) Basic Council Member: Lim Beom-seop, Chairman of the Gwangju City Party Special Committee on Small Business Owners

An official from the People Power Party's Gwangju City Party Committee stated, "This election goes beyond simply selecting local representatives; it will serve as an opportunity to restore the dynamism of Honam, which has been stagnant amidst the monopolistic structure of a specific political party." He added, "We will conduct a policy-oriented campaign with our confirmed candidates to earn the sincere support of the citizens." With the central party also signaling full support in consideration of the symbolic significance of the integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City, attention is focused on whether the People Power Party can bring about a change in the landscape of public sentiment in the Honam region in the June 3 local elections to be held a month from now.
