“Gwangju and Jeonnam Reunite with the Spirit of May”… 5·18 Democracy Bell Ringing Ceremony Held
Commemorating the 46th Anniversary of May 18, Praying for the Success of the ‘Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City’ Launching on July 1 and Grand Unification - Mayor Kang Ki-jung: “We Will Move Forward Toward a Stronger Democracy… We Must Join Forces, Including Inclusion in the Preamble of the Constitution”
(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Gwangju Metropolitan City and Jeollanam-do have pledged to inherit the spirit of solidarity of the May 18 Democratization Movement and to make a successful leap forward in the upcoming era of integration.
Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that it held the ‘Democracy Bell Ringing Ceremony’ at the Bell Pavilion of Democracy in 5·18 Democracy Plaza at 5:18 PM on the 18th to commemorate the 46th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement and to pledge a new leap forward for Gwangju and Jeonnam.
This year's bell-ringing ceremony held added significance as it was organized as a venue for communication and grand integration, inheriting the history of solidarity in which Gwangju and Jeonnam united to defend democracy in May 1980, while simultaneously wishing for the success of the "Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City," which is scheduled for its official launch on July 1.
The event was attended by a large number of city and provincial officials and political and business figures, including Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jung, Jeonnam Vice Governor for Economic Affairs Kang Wi-won, Gwangju City Council Vice Chairperson Chae Eun-ji, Jeonnam Provincial Council Vice Chairperson Lee Kwang-il, Gwangju City Deputy Superintendent of Education Choi Seung-bok, Jeonnam Deputy Superintendent of Education Hwang Seong-hwan, Democratic Party of Korea Gwangju City Committee Chairman Yang Bu-nam, National Assembly member Shin Jeong-hoon, and heads of 5.18 institutions and organizations.
In particular, the participation of key figures representing Gwangju and Jeonnam as bell ringers conveyed to the citizens the historical significance of the "grand integration of the city and province," bringing them together as one for the first time in over 40 years. Attendees rang the Bell of Democracy a total of 33 times at exactly 5:18 PM on May 18, embodying the values of democracy, human rights, and peace.
Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jung emphasized, “Based on the Gwangju Spirit, Gwangju and Jeonnam will become one again and move forward toward a stronger democracy,” adding, “I ask the city and province to continue joining forces to resolve remaining regional tasks with one heart, such as the inclusion of the May 18 Spirit in the Preamble of the Constitution.”
Meanwhile, the Bell of Democracy was erected in May 18 Democracy Square in October 2005 as a symbol of the city of democracy, human rights, and peace to pass on to future generations the historical ‘Gwangju Spirit,’ which spans the Imjin War, the spirit of the Righteous Army during the late Joseon Dynasty, the Gwangju Student Independence Uprising during the Japanese colonial period, and the May 18 Democratization Movement.
