Gwangju Youth Take First Steps to Become ‘Global Leaders’ by Promoting May 18 and K-Culture in the US East Coast
Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education Hosts ‘Global Leadership Camp’ for 20 High School Students; Diverse Exchanges Extensive from Visits to Harvard and Boston Universities to Sharing Democracy and Global Citizenship
(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education has launched a large-scale global field experience education program to cultivate global citizenship and strengthen the future capabilities of local high school students.
The Office of Education announced that it will host the ‘Global Leadership Camp,’ with 20 high school students from the Gwangju region participating, in the US East Coast for eight days and seven nights from the 3rd to the 10th. This camp was designed to allow participating students to directly experience advanced educational sites and prestigious universities in the US, and to solidify inclusive global citizenship and next-generation leadership through multifaceted exchanges with local youth.
The most significant feature of this camp lies in the thorough student-led preparation process that began even before departure. Prior to their departure, the participating students completed a total of 12 hours of intensive pre-departure training and personally designed the local exchange program.
In particular, the students studied in depth the historical nobility and significance of the May 18 Democratization Movement—a source of pride for Gwangju and a milestone in South Korean democracy—as well as modern Korean culture, including K-pop, which has captivated the world. Furthermore, to effectively convey this to local American students, they demonstrated passion by personally planning activities such as a flash mob themed around the May 18 Democratization Movement, K-pop cultural performances, and participatory experiential activities that reinterpreted traditional Korean games with a modern sensibility.
During their 7-night, 8-day itinerary, the students will participate in a diverse program encompassing both academic inquiry and cultural exchange. The main itinerary consists of: ▲ visits to prestigious universities in the Eastern United States, along with special lectures and discussions by local faculty; ▲ career consulting with university student mentors; ▲ exchange visits to the Southern New Jersey Integrated Korean School and Democracy Prep Harlem High School; ▲ a joint visit to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York; and ▲ a flash mob commemorating the May 18 Democratization Movement and K-pop cultural performances.
The depth of the academic program is also exceptional. Students visiting Boston University will participate in a special lecture on the theme of "Global Leadership in the Digital Age," engaging in lively presentations and discussions regarding their roles as global leaders on common global issues such as the climate crisis. Subsequently, at Rutgers University, they will attend a special lecture on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and embark on practical explorations for a sustainable future alongside local university student mentors.
Emotional and cultural exchanges with local youth will also take place. The Southern New Jersey Integrated Korean School fosters bonds with overseas Korean students by engaging in deep conversations on the themes of the Korean language, culture, and identity, and by enjoying traditional games and cultural performances together. Additionally, the school conducts a cultural and artistic tour of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) with students from Democracy Prep Harlem High School in New York, providing a meaningful opportunity to mutually understand each other's history and cultural backgrounds.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Office of Education expects that through this camp, students will gain a multifaceted perspective on American history firsthand and cultivate diverse viewpoints on the values of democracy and global issues, thereby demonstrating more mature communication and discussion skills. Noh Jeong-hyeon, Head of the Future Citizenship Education Division at the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, emphasized, “This Global Leadership Camp will serve as a decisive opportunity for our local students to embrace diverse cultures and values and acquire the core competencies necessary as global citizens,” adding, “We will significantly expand and operate customized global programs so that all students in Jeonnam and Gwangju can directly participate in high-quality international exchange activities at least once during their school years.”
