Geoje City Holds Meeting with Samsung Heavy Industries to Expand Youth Employment

Geoje City held a meeting with Samsung Heavy Industries to discuss strategies for fostering local talent and expanding youth employment.

On the 24th, the city held a meeting with Samsung Heavy Industries officials, including Mayor Byun Kwang-yong, Lee Seong-rak, Head of Human Resources Support, and Seo Jeong-wook, Head of the Human Resources Planning Team, to discuss cooperation measures for nurturing local talent and expanding youth employment.

This meeting was organized to connect the achievements of the shipbuilding industry's supercycle to local youth employment and settlement in the region.

While the sites of the two major shipyards are regaining vitality due to the shipbuilding boom—the first in over a decade—Geoje City's population has continuously declined since peaking in 2016 and has currently fallen below 230,000.

In particular, given that the outflow of young people can lead to the stagnation of local commercial districts and a weakening of living conditions, it was determined that establishing a foundation for local talent to stably take root in the local industrial sector is urgent. Following the signing of an agreement with Hanwha Ocean last April regarding the nurturing and recruitment of local youth talent, Geoje City is expanding its foundation for cooperation with the two major shipyards to foster local talent and increase youth employment through this meeting with Samsung Heavy Industries.

During the meeting, participants exchanged broad opinions on topics including fostering field-oriented talent that meets the demands of the shipbuilding industry, increasing the entry of local youth into the industrial field, strengthening the foundation for hiring local talent, and strategies to link employment to the local shipbuilding industry.

Geoje Mayor Byun Kwang-yong stated, "Close cooperation between the region and companies is paramount for the recovery of the shipbuilding industry to translate into opportunities for local youth," adding, "We will continue to explore practical cooperation measures with Samsung Heavy Industries to foster local talent and expand recruitment."

Lee Seong-rak, Head of Human Resources Support at Samsung Heavy Industries, remarked, "Growing together with the local community is a crucial value closely linked to corporate sustainability," and added, "We plan to promote the nurturing of local talent and the expansion of our recruitment base based on communication with Geoje City." For reference, Samsung Heavy Industries stated that it hired 280 people last year, and that 16 of the 50 production workers recently hired were from the Geoje region.

Meanwhile, Geoje City signed a regional mutual development agreement with the two major shipyards last March and is striving to lay the groundwork for the joint growth of the region and companies by establishing a region-company cooperation governance, operating a regular consultative body, and identifying joint cooperation projects.
