Yonhap, Save the Children host mini marathon to support children of migrant workers

SEOUL, May 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's key news service Yonhap News Agency and international charity Save the Children co-hosted a fundraising marathon on Saturday, seeking to help children of migrant workers and increase public awareness of children's rights.

Around 3,000 participants, including children, ran a 4.2-kilometer course in Yeouido Park in western Seoul to support children with migrant backgrounds who face challenges in access to medical care, education and other child care services.

"Today's marathon is not merely about running," Yonhap News Agency President and CEO Hwang Dae-il said in his congratulatory remarks read by Kim Jae-hong, an executive director at the agency. "Your heartfelt effort and participation in today's running will serve as an encouragement to children who are struggling far away."

Gabriel Taeyoung Jung, CEO of Save the Children Korea, vowed to ensure that "all children are protected without discrimination and can grow up healthy regardless of their backgrounds."

About 110,000 people have participated in the marathon since it was first launched in 2011.

The marathon was also held simultaneously in four other cities this day, including the central city of Daejeon and Busan, and will continue in 11 regions throughout October.
