We Are All Trying Here continues to explore an emotional escape from feelings of worthlessness through evolving relationships between its characters. At the center of that transformation stands Byun Eun-a, played by Go Youn-jung, whose influence steadily reshapes Hwang Dong-man (Koo Kyo-hwan).

Dong-man is a man who has spent 20 years unable to complete a single project, ultimately defining himself as “nothing.” Eun-a, however, sees through his inner turmoil and begins creating gradual fractures in that self-perception. Rather than offering empty comfort, she initiates what the drama frames as a step-by-step “power-up” process leading toward genuine change.
The first shift begins with emotional hunger. Dong-man’s endless eating habits are revealed to stem not from physical appetite, but psychological emptiness. By offering him warm homemade food, Eun-a provides the sense of stability he has long craved, slowly softening emotions that had hardened over time.
The second stage centers on identity. In front of Dong-man, who shrinks whenever he hears the word “unemployed,” Eun-a firmly calls him a “film director.” That single phrase becomes the catalyst that revives both his forgotten potential and his sense of value.
Episode 5 signals an even more decisive turning point. Eun-a tells him, “I’ll stay by your side and watch,” offering to become his closest audience. Her willingness to fully accept even his long-winded stories and imagination is expected to become a powerful force in restoring his confidence as a creator.
The drama ultimately asks how far one person’s belief can transform another human being. Through connection rather than achievement, it attempts to answer that question.
Attention is now focused on whether Dong-man can turn the title Eun-a gave him into reality.
Episode 5 of We Are All Trying Here airs May 2 on JTBC.
