The three telecom service providers regretted the hacking incident last year and promised to cut communication costs and invest in artificial intelligence at home and abroad. However, civic groups and others demanded proper response, saying, “There has been no actual recovery of customer trust.”

SK Telecom CEO Jeong Jae-hun, KT CEO Park Yoon-young, and LG Uplus CEO Hong Bum-sik held a meeting with Bae Kyounghun's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT on the 9th and issued a joint declaration aimed at strengthening communication.
According to the report, the three telecom companies will take lessons from the last hacking incident to strengthen their safer and more reliable security systems. We will make efforts to expand practical benefits so that all LTE and 5G data pricing plan can enjoy the highest level of communication services. To this end, the company plans to include QoS in all LTE and 5G data pricing plan without raising fares, and launch LTE and 5G integrated rate plans within the first half of the year. In addition, they decided to make active efforts to expand investment in telecommunications and next-generation AI networks.
However, it is pointed out by civic groups that “it should not stop at an empty flame.”
In the case of KT, the application period was shortened at the end of last year when it exempted the penalty fee, and it was recently pointed out that it was made into a structure that customers could not receive unless they applied, said Jeong Ji-yeon, secretary-general of the Korea Consumer Federation. “We do not intend to raise much significance when the three telecommunications companies rush to do well, but we need to eliminate these problems to restore consumer trust.”
Although telecommunication companies have emphasized expanding investment in telecommunication networks this time, the issue of investment in telecommunication networks is still not improved, although the National Assembly and civic groups point out it every year.
In fact, there are still many cases where 5G signals are not well captured on mobile phones and 4G mobile communication (LTE) signals are still captured even when using 5G pricing plan. According to Lee Jung-hun, a lawmaker of the Democratic Party of Korea, as of last year, the total number of 5G base stations of the three telecommunication companies stood at 362,000, which is only one third of LTE base stations (1.105 million).
As the telecommunications company has declared its investment in AI this time, the financial burden will increase if it makes investments in both AI and communication areas at the same time. To realize this, we have to watch the management situation.
“6G mobile communication service will fail at this rate,” said an industry source who asked not to be identified. “Although it is said that the integrated rate system will be implemented, the integrated rate system is already in effect as LTE is used if a 5G pricing plan is used,” he said. “Investment in AI is good, but we should focus more on enhancing consumers’ satisfaction with the telecommunication service system.”
