Samsung Electronics has decided to stop selling televisions and home appliances in mainland China as part of a broader restructuring strategy focused on profitability and future growth businesses.
Industry sources said Wednesday that the South Korean company recently informed local distribution channels and business partners of its plan to halt sales of TVs and home appliances in China, where the company has struggled against aggressive price competition from Chinese rivals.
Existing customers who purchased Samsung appliances in China will continue to receive free and paid after-sales services in accordance with Chinese consumer protection laws and related regulations.
Samsung said it will continue operating businesses including mobile devices, semiconductors and medical equipment in China.
The company plans to strengthen its competitiveness in the Chinese smartphone market through Galaxy AI features and China-specific smartphone models and services such as the W series, marketed under the “Heart to the World” branding.
Samsung will also continue research and development activities for mobile technologies while maintaining operations at its Suzhou home appliance plant and semiconductor facilities in Xi’an and Suzhou.
During its first-quarter earnings conference call earlier this year, Samsung said profitability pressures in its appliance business were increasing due to intensifying competition and tariff-related risks, adding that it was pursuing a strategy of “selection and concentration” across its businesses.
