Samsung Electronics is distributing record-level compensation to its employees, buoyed by a recovery in semiconductor market conditions, and is intensifying the competition for talent acquisition. As performance improvements become increasingly evident, analysts say the company has entered an era where the average monthly salary per employee reaches 12 million won (approximately $8,571).

Korea CXO Research Institute, a corporate analysis firm, released an analysis on May 19 estimating that Samsung Electronics employees’ average compensation in the first quarter of this year will reach between 34 million won and 38 million won. Based on the midpoint value of 36 million won, the average monthly salary comes to approximately 12 million won, a figure that represents a surge of more than 25% compared to the same period last year.

The analysis was calculated based on salary line items from Samsung Electronics’ separate financial statements and average employee headcount based on National Pension Service enrollment data. Total salary expenses recorded under expenses by nature for the first quarter of this year came to 5.6032 trillion won (approximately $4.00 billion), marking the first time Samsung Electronics’ quarterly salary costs have surpassed 5 trillion won.

The sharp rise in total compensation is cited as being primarily driven by a rebound in the semiconductor division’s performance and the corresponding payment of performance bonuses. When applying the average headcount of 125,580 employees from January through March of this year, the average compensation per person is projected to range from a minimum of 33.91 million won to a maximum of 38.15 million won. Compared with the first quarter of last year’s estimated range of 27 million won to 30 million won, the total compensation growth rate approaches 25.8%.

It should be noted, however, that since these figures represent a simple average across all employees, actual pay received may vary on an individual basis. As Samsung Electronics’ wage structure is characterized by a higher proportion of performance-based pay relative to base salary, the level of compensation actually experienced by employees is expected to differ depending on the division’s performance, job grade, and years of service.

Industry observers analyze that the competition for talent between major semiconductor conglomerates such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix is being reflected in their compensation structures. Competitor SK Hynix recorded an average annual salary of 185 million won (approximately $132,143) for its employees last year, a 58.1% increase from the prior year, reaching an all-time high. As the battle for leadership in the semiconductor market intensifies, companies’ exceptional compensation policies are expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
