Terafab
Elon Musk revealed plans to build two advanced semiconductor factories in Austin, Texas, through a collaboration involving Tesla and SpaceX.
The facilities will form part of a broader project known as Terafab, designed to meet future demand for artificial intelligence computing.
Each factory will produce a single chip type, with one focused on powering Tesla vehicles and humanoid robots, and the other tailored for AI systems in space-based applications. The initiative follows earlier plans to establish a dedicated AI chip manufacturing complex.
Musk indicated that current global semiconductor production would be insufficient to meet the long-term needs of his companies, despite existing partnerships with suppliers such as Samsung Electronics and TSMC.
The proposed facilities are expected to eventually generate one terawatt of computing capacity annually, surpassing current U.S. output levels. One of the chips will be engineered specifically for space environments, requiring enhanced durability and heat resistance.
