LS Cable & System is joining forces with Korea Power Engineering Company to pursue an early lead in the floating offshore wind market.

LS Cable & System announced on May 11 that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Korea Power Engineering Company for cooperation on floating offshore wind.

The agreement aims to combine LS Cable & System’s submarine cable technology with Korea Power Engineering Company’s Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) capabilities to build a “design-integrated cooperation model” that incorporates cable specifications from the power system design stage onward.

The two companies plan to participate jointly from the initial engineering phase to optimize power systems and cable systems.

Floating offshore wind generates electricity by floating structures on the sea and has the advantage of being deployable farther offshore compared to fixed-bottom installations. The industry expects the floating offshore wind market to grow rapidly. However, because structures remain continuously afloat, the technology demands complex integrated design that accounts not only for electrical performance but also for mechanical load and fatigue, making it a highly sophisticated engineering challenge.

LS Cable & System has developed what it calls a “dynamic submarine cable” designed to address this environment, becoming the first in South Korea to do so. The company can also generate synergy with its subsidiary LS Marine Solution. LS Cable & System is additionally pursuing floating offshore wind business cooperation with global companies. Korea Power Engineering Company, for its part, holds particular strengths in the integrated mechanical and electrical design required for dynamic cable engineering.

An official at LS Cable & System said, “Participation in the design stage determines contract wins in floating offshore wind,” adding, “We will continue to strengthen our global competitiveness based on turnkey capabilities encompassing design, manufacturing, construction, operation, and maintenance, together with LS Marine Solution.”
