LG Uplus is showcasing its advanced telecommunications technologies for the water industry at the International Water Industry Expo (WATER KOREA), becoming the first telecom operator to participate in the event.
The company announced that it has set up an exhibition booth at WATER KOREA, held from March 18 to 20 at BEXCO in Busan, where it is presenting a range of solutions covering the full spectrum of water management—from remote meter reading to infrastructure safety monitoring.
WATER KOREA, launched in 2002, is the largest comprehensive water industry exhibition in South Korea. The event connects companies, academia, government agencies, and international organizations through exhibitions, conferences, and more than 30 related programs. LG Uplus is participating as the leading telecom provider in the remote water metering sector.
Since commercializing a nationwide Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) network in July 2017—the first in the telecom industry—LG Uplus has operated approximately 2.5 million remote water metering connections. Given that water meters are often installed underground or inside buildings where communication can be unstable, the company utilizes the 850MHz frequency band, known for its superior penetration and diffraction capabilities, to ensure reliable data transmission.
At the exhibition, LG Uplus is highlighting IoT communication technologies and key solutions that provide stable connectivity even in challenging environments such as underground facilities. Its remote metering solution uses IoT devices attached to water meters to automatically collect usage data and transmit it over communication networks. This improves accuracy compared to manual inspections while enabling early detection of leaks and excessive usage, contributing to more efficient water resource management.
The company is also presenting AIoT-based solutions that monitor the condition of water infrastructure in real time—from water purification and supply to wastewater treatment. These solutions help detect anomalies such as impacts or leaks and enable rapid response to potential incidents.
In particular, maintenance work inside manholes poses significant risks, including exposure to hazardous gases and structural collapses. To address these challenges, LG Uplus has developed a “Smart Facility Safety Monitoring” solution that remotely detects infrastructure conditions using IoT devices and performs real-time diagnostics with AI. The system also supports remote communication with workers, enabling safer operations in underground environments.
Additionally, LG Uplus is showcasing an “AI-based Integrated Control Platform” that allows operators to monitor multiple devices in a single interface. The platform analyzes data collected from IoT devices using AI to detect abnormalities such as leaks or ground subsidence, while enabling remote control of connected devices. It also offers customizable dashboards tailored to specific solutions and supports cloud-based infrastructure, allowing flexible system expansion without additional development.
Looking ahead, LG Uplus plans to continue expanding its communication-based solutions to improve efficiency across the water industry. The company also aims to enhance its AI algorithms within the integrated control platform to identify early warning signs before actual issues occur, enabling proactive response.
Park Sung-yul, Head of the Enterprise Business Innovation Group at LG Uplus, said the company has continuously worked to improve efficiency in water industry management through reliable IoT communication based on high-quality frequency bands. He added that LG Uplus will continue to deliver customized solutions combining AI and IoT technologies to enhance operational efficiency for local governments and public sectors, while contributing to the prevention of safety accidents.
