LG Innotek has decided to jointly develop autonomous driving solutions with Kakao Mobility, the largest mobility platform company in South Korea. LG Innotek plans to accelerate its market penetration by expanding the optical technology know-how it has accumulated in smartphones into physical artificial intelligence (AI) sensing.
On May 20, the two companies announced that under the agreement, they will jointly develop autonomous driving solutions by combining LG Innotek’s unrivaled sensing technology with Kakao Mobility’s autonomous driving data collection infrastructure and software capabilities.
The autonomous driving solution to be developed this time will apply LG Innotek’s sensing modules, such as high-performance cameras, radar, and LiDAR, which are optimized for Kakao Mobility’s platform services, along with Kakao Mobility’s software. Furthermore, they agreed to jointly conduct research and development to effectively secure real-world driving data, which is the core of advancing autonomous driving technology.
LG Innotek plans to improve the performance and completeness of its sensing modules, including cameras, radar, and LiDAR, by receiving real-world driving data from Kakao Mobility.
Kakao Mobility currently operates an ‘Autonomous Driving Data Integrated Management System’ that automates the entire process from the collection of autonomous driving data to learning and distribution. The company plans to apply LG Innotek’s sensing technology to this system. The policy is to upgrade the autonomous driving system through LG Innotek’s sensing modules.
Ryu Gung-seon, Chief Executive Officer of Kakao Mobility, said, “Through collaboration with LG Innotek, we will secure high-quality driving data and speed up the acquisition and internalization of end-to-end autonomous driving core technologies.” He added, “We will continue to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic autonomous driving ecosystem through strategic partnerships that combine software and hardware.”
Moon Hyuk-soo, President of LG Innotek, said, “The completeness of autonomous driving is ultimately determined by data,” adding, “This is a great opportunity to advance LG Innotek’s sensing technology through cooperation with Kakao Mobility.” He emphasized, “We will become a top-tier company in the physical AI sensing field by providing customized sensing solutions for customers not only in autonomous driving but also in new fields such as robots and drones.”
Meanwhile, LG Innotek is securing market leadership by expanding and applying its differentiated optical technology accumulated in the smartphone sector to physical AI areas such as autonomous driving and robots. The company has secured all the core source technologies for cameras, radar, and LiDAR, which are essential sensors for autonomous driving. The company aims to grow the sales of its mobility sensing solution business to the scale of 2 trillion won ($1.33 billion) by 2030.
Recently, LG Innotek has signed a strategic partnership with Applied Intuition for the joint development of autonomous driving solutions, as well as an agreement with Boston Dynamics for the joint development of a vision sensing system for humanoids.
