Korean group eyes AI chips and EV parts as key drivers
R&D unit to support partnerships with global tech manufacturers
LG Chem said on the 30th that it plans to raise sales of electronic materials to about USD 1.3 billion by 2030, roughly double the current level. The target focuses on materials used in AI semiconductors, automotive electronics, and next-generation displays. The company said it will tilt its portfolio further toward high-value advanced materials.
The firm recently established an integrated R&D organization within its Advanced Materials Research Center to focus on semiconductors, automotive electronics, and display materials. Hundreds of researchers will work on early-stage development using LG Chem’s material design, synthesis, and processing capabilities. The goal is to secure core technologies early and commercialize selected projects.
In semiconductors, LG Chem is moving from memory-focused products into AI and non-memory packaging materials as chip packaging becomes more complex. It already supplies CCL and DAF and has developed PID materials for fine circuit connections with leading chipmakers. The company is also expanding process chemicals and preparing technologies for glass substrates.
LG Chem is broadening its role in electric and autonomous vehicle components. It supplies thermal interface adhesives for batteries and ESS, as well as materials for motors, power semiconductors, and sensors. It is also working with partners on switchable glazing films and photo-polymer films for windshield displays.
The company is reinforcing its display materials business as demand grows in areas such as extended reality and robotics. CEO Kim Dong-choon said LG Chem will concentrate its capabilities on future new materials to become a technology-centered advanced materials company.
