[Columnist Cho Min-ki, Korea Lecturer News] The movie <The Man Who Lives with the King>, which depicts the last moments of Danjong, has surpassed 16.7 million viewers, ranking second in the box office rankings of all time, and 'Danjong Pilgrimage' is said to be popular. Regarding this appearance, which has become a phenomenon beyond box office success, it is said that the entire nation is holding Danjong's funeral together more than 500 years after his death.

Not only did the movie become a box office success, but the number of people who mourned the tragedy of 'Danjong's brother' and visited Yeongwol Cheongnyeongpo in Gangwon-do, where he was exiled, and visited Danjong's original temple, Bodeoksa. It is truly surprising that Danjong's place of exile is attracting more attention than Sejo's Gwangneung and Bongseonsa, which have been loved for their royal temples and beautiful arboretums.

The perfect authenticity of the discontinued

Danjong was the first son born in the royal palace since the founding of Joseon. In Joseon, which established Neo-Confucianism based on the principle of succession of the eldest son, the prince born as the eldest son of the king and queen was called the original son, and the prince born as the eldest son of the crown prince and the crown prince was called the original grandson. From Myeongho, it was confirmed that he was the successor to the throne in the future.

However, contrary to strict principles, Joseon succeeded to the throne through the 'Prince's Rebellion' until the third Taejong Lee Bang-won. Taejong wanted to pass the throne to his eldest son and eldest son, Prince Yangnyeong, but the crown prince used his power as a weapon and constantly caused trouble. In the end, Taejong deposed the crown prince, Prince Yangnyeong, and installed his third son, Prince Chungnyeong, who had abilities and personalities rather than legitimacy, as king. He is the 4th King Sejong.

King Sejong and Queen Soheon had a good relationship with gold and had as many as eight sons. King Sejong also had many children in his concubines, and there were 10 princes born to his concubines. However, among them, the prince with the most outstanding character and ability was definitely the crown prince Munjong. King Sejong had no worries about his succession, and the 5th King Munjong was the first king to succeed to the throne with the status of the crown prince and crown prince since the founding of the country.

The legitimacy of Danjong, the eldest son of King Munjong, was more perfect than his father's. Danjong, who was born in Gyeongbokgung Palace, was the eldest and only son of the crown prince and crown prince, and was the only son of King Sejong. After that, Danjong ascended to the throne as king through the positions of Wonson, Crown Prince, and Crown Prince. From the moment of birth to the moment of his accession, the legitimacy of the distant sect was impeccable.

On the other hand, Prince Suyang, who usurped the throne of King Danjong, was born as the second son of the 4th King Sejong and Queen Soheon, Sim. Prince Suyang was always the closest to the throne. The status of the king's son, the king's younger brother, and the king's uncle, was noble and dignified. However, in Joseon, where Neo-Confucianism was established as the ruling ideology of the principle of succession to the eldest son, he could never ascend the throne.

Joseon's first queen

So, what kind of person was Queen Jeongsun, the queen of Danjong? In Joseon, from Taejo Lee Seong-gye to the 5th Munjong, everyone ascended the throne with a married body. Danjong's mother, Queen Hyeondeok, passed away just one day after giving birth to Danjong during her time as crown prince. After that, King Munjong did not welcome a new crown prince and remained vacant as queen until the day of his death. In other words, except for Munjong, who ascended the throne as a widower, the four kings already had queens when they ascended the throne. On the other hand, Danjong, who ascended the throne at the young age of 12, was unmarried, and Danjong's 'queen's appointment' was the first time since the founding of the country. Therefore, it was very important for Danjong to become queen.

In the second year of his reign, Danjong welcomed the queen. It was before the three-year mourning period of King Munjong was completed. Why was Danjong in such a hurry to get married? Becoming queen was not the will of the King of Danjong. The person who forced Danjong's marriage was Prince Suyang, who caused the Gyeyujeong Rebellion the year after Danjong's accession and eliminated all the ministers and courtiers who were in dispute overnight, such as Hwang Bo-in of Yeonguijeong and Kim Jong-seo of Jwauijeong, and seized power.

Queen of Danjong, Queen Jeongsun Song

Prince Suyang chose Song Hyun-so's daughter as his queen. When Danjong's marriage proceeded as planned, Prince Suyang was satisfied. Queen Jeongsun's father, Song Hyun-so, was not able to pass the exam in the past and was not very capable. However, when her sister, who was beautiful, became the wife of King Sejong's youngest son, Prince Yeongeung, she formed a relationship with the royal family, and thanks to that, she was able to make a small mistake. In addition, Song Hyun-so's wife was the wife and cousin of Han Myung-hoe, who was the right-hand man of Prince Suyang and emerged as the core of his power. In other words, Song Hyun-so, who rose to prominence thanks to his sister and daughter, had little political influence and was an easy figure for Prince Suyang to deal with.

However, Queen Jeongsun, who became the protagonist of the first national marriage after the founding of the country, stayed as queen for only a little over a year. The following year, with the abdication of King Danjong, Prince Suyang finally ascended the throne, and as King Danjong stepped down as King Sang, Queen Jeongsun also became a concubine.

In the still cut of the movie 'The Man Who Lives with the King', Danjong goes to Yeongwol Cheongnyeongpo, a place of exile

The year after Prince Suyang ascended the throne, the movement to restore King Danjong took place, led by Seong Sammun and Park Pengnyeon, who were loyal subjects of King Sejong and King Munjong and assisted King Danjong. The plan was to eliminate King Suyang and restore King Danjong, who had resigned as King Sang, as king. However, the rebellion was discovered before it even started and failed, and the subjects who participated in the movement to restore King Danjong, such as Seong Sammun and Park Pengnyeon, were killed, and their families fell into slavery.

Danjong was demoted to Nosangun and exiled to Cheongnyeongpo, Yeongwol, Gangwon-do, and passed away the following year. The movie <The Man Who Lives with King> depicts the months that Danjong, who was exiled at the young age of 17, spent several months in Cheongnyeongpo in Yeongwol.

When Danjong passed away, Queen Jeongsun, who became a widow at the age of 18, was demoted to a slave and spent the rest of her life as a temple worker where royal women stayed. Queen Jeongsun spent a whopping 65 years at Jeongyewon. She remained a quiet ascetic, refusing any support from the royal family, and watched all those who had caused her husband Danjong die as they passed away.
