Palace of the Rais, one of the monuments of the city of Algiers

An Ottoman-era cannon on display in the Palace of the Rais, also known as Bastion 23, a complex of palaces and houses dating to the Ottoman period, in Algiers, Algeria, 14 May 2026. The Palace of the Rais in Algiers is a historic monument linked to the Casbah's expansion towards the sea. Originally established as Bordj-Ez-Zoubia in 1576, it later became recognized as Palace 18, built in 1750 by Ottoman naval leader Rais Mami Arnaout, then called Bastion 23 during French colonial rule. Restoration occurred from 1987 to 1993, and it became the Arts and Culture Center in 1994. It is connected to the Casbah of Algiers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. EPA/MOHAMED MESSARA
