The Democratic Party of Korea’s national convention appears to be unfolding hotter than a midsummer heatwave. Beyond the mere election of a party leader, the competition between the "pro-Lee" faction centered on President Lee Jae-myung and the "pro-Cheong" faction centered on former leader Chung Cheong-rae is fierce enough to resemble a power struggle. This reveals an extreme confrontational structure where the opposing side is viewed not as a competitor, but as an enemy to be eliminated.

Looking at the war of words between the supporters of both sides, this is by no means an exaggerated speculation or prejudgment. A look at various online communities currently reveals an atmosphere where the other side is even regarded as a sworn enemy to be completely eradicated. This acts as a source of instability, as it raises doubts about the ability to unite and the leadership of the government and the ruling party, which are the core entities of state administration.

The pro-Lee faction highlights former leader Chung’s responsibility for the local elections and takes issue with his candidacy itself. They also keep him in check, arguing that his reappointment would accelerate President Lee’s lame duck status. At the same time, they become agitated, asking, "Are you trying to take on President Lee head-on?" and claiming that he is "intending a head-on collision." This reaction can be seen as reflecting the sense of crisis among pro-Myeong supporters.

Some hardline supporters on the pro-Cheong side are expressing outrage, going so far as to claim that "President Lee is someone who should be in jail," asserting that he is "someone who deserves to be impeached," and that "we saved someone who should already be in jail and made him president, only for him to now try to block former Representative Chung's re-election." They are expressing their dissatisfaction by pouring out fierce criticism, calling him "someone with no pedigree for democratization" and "someone without roots."

From former Representative Chung's perspective, it is known that while there were official meals with President Lee and various lawmakers during his tenure as party leader, he never had a private meal or tea conversation with the president alone. However, according to media reports, President Lee invited Representative Song Young-gil to the Blue House for a private dinner just a few days after Song was elected in a by-election.

Furthermore, Representative Chung was excluded from the farewell ceremony for President Lee's departure from the country. As this was widely reported in the media and became a topic of public discussion, Representative Chung was invited to the welcoming ceremony for President Lee’s return just nine days later to maintain appearances. Some within former Representative Chung’s camp interpret this series of events as a signal of political alienation or discomfort.

What are the sentiments felt by the quiet members of the Democratic Party and the general public, who have no vested interest, regarding the President’s method of managing internal party relations and political communication? This could leave the public questioning the dignity of the nation’s top leader. If this situation persists, it could lead to a weakening of governance, potentially acting as a significant burden on the overall operation of the administration beyond the lame duck period.

Regarding the candidates for party leader at the upcoming national convention, some in the political sphere speculate that former Prime Minister Kim Min-suk is a key candidate from the pro-Myung faction. However, this could create an even more subtle rift with the so-called "Moon-Jo-Teol-Rae-Yu" (Moon Jae-in, Cho Kuk, Kim Ou-joon, Chung Chung-rae, and Rhyu Si-min) camp, which is classified as the Democratic Party's hardline support base. The situation has reached a point where even the loose alliance maintained with them is inevitably bound to be deeply shaken.

Above all, even if former Prime Minister Kim is elected party leader, if he fails to adequately serve as the focal point for the pro-Myeong faction, President Lee’s base within the party—excluding the core pro-Myeong forces—could weaken. This would undermine his political standing and further increase the political burden surrounding various pending judicial issues.

Furthermore, as he pours all his energy into internal power struggles and managing his own legal risks, the momentum for state administration is likely to weaken, and his policy vision is highly likely to become blurred. In other words, this could become a catalyst for directionless governance, where President Lee brings about his own political isolation and crisis. This suggests that the situation could escalate into a crisis of a new dimension.

The possibility of impeachment currently being raised by some goes beyond mere bluffs and can be interpreted as a sign reflecting the administration's crisis. This is particularly concerning the sensitive issue of "withdrawal of indictment" or "dismissal of indictment." Controversy over this is highly likely to trigger a new debate between the political sphere and the public regarding the administration's political legitimacy. Moreover, if such controversy drags on, the burden on state affairs will inevitably increase. Some even raise the possibility that this political burden could lead to a greater political crisis in the future. Even if the pro-Myeong faction seizes control of the party, it appears unlikely that they will be able to fundamentally resolve this political burden.
