Jinju City Gathers Citizens' Will for the Completion of Gyeongnam Jinju Innovation City

Over 2,000 Citizens Speak with One Voice… Urging Attraction of Power Generation Enterprises, Retention of LH, and Second Phase of Public Institution Relocation

On the morning of the 26th, around 10:00 AM, Jinju City held the "Citizens' Resolution Rally for the Completion of Gyeongnam Jinju Innovation City" at the Jinju Indoor Gymnasium, declaring the local community's determination for the completion of the innovation city and the leap forward of Western Gyeongnam.

The event was attended by approximately 2,000 people, including Jinju Mayor Cho Gyu-il, Jinju City Council Chairperson Park Mi-kyung, and Heo Seong-du, Co-chair of the Jinju Public Institution Attraction Committee; Gyeongnam Provincial Administrative Vice Governor Park Il-woong; provincial and city council members; officials from relocated public institutions; and citizens.

Participants united the will of the local community by urging the swift implementation of three major pending issues: attracting the integrated headquarters of power generation enterprises, such as Korea Southern Power (KOSPO), to Jinju; opposing the split relocation of the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) and retaining its headquarters in Jinju; and the second phase of the relocation of public institutions from the Seoul metropolitan area.

Regarding the attraction of the integrated headquarters of state-owned power companies, it was explained that Jinju is the optimal location, possessing transportation and accessibility capable of connecting major power generation hubs in the Yeongnam and Honam regions within one hour, as well as excellent residential conditions based on the existing Innovation City.

Furthermore, the justification for attracting the integrated headquarters to Jinju was conveyed, noting that utilizing the existing Korea Southern Power (KOSPO) office building would save the massive budget and time required for constructing a new building, while also allowing for the leverage of the established residential infrastructure and related industrial infrastructure within the Innovation City.

The participants clearly expressed the local community's stance against the split relocation of LH and insisted on keeping the headquarters in Jinju. They also expressed concern over the possibility of renewed discussions on the LH split, which were initiated in 2021, and strongly urged that no decision be made contrary to the will of the local residents.

In addition, they urged that the second phase of the relocation of public institutions from the Seoul metropolitan area be expedited, centering on existing Innovation Cities. They emphasized that the Gyeongnam Jinju Innovation City must be established as a hub for balanced national development and regional growth through the relocation of public institutions that considers regional characteristics and industrial connectivity.

Jinju Mayor Cho Kyu-il stated, “This gathering goes beyond a mere event; we will complete the future of the Gyeongnam Jinju Innovation City through the power of the citizens,” adding, “We will definitely resolve key pending issues together with the citizens to contribute to the development of western Gyeongnam and the balanced growth of the Republic of Korea.”

Meanwhile, taking this citizens’ resolution rally as an opportunity, Jinju City plans to further consolidate the capabilities of the local community and, together with Gyeongnam Province, continuously engage in comprehensive lobbying and attraction activities targeting the government, the National Assembly, and relevant agencies to ensure that local demands are reflected in the government policy announcement scheduled for this coming September.
