Jeungpyeong County Opens First Intangible Cultural Heritage Training Center… Master Brushmaker Yu Pil-mu Carries on the Legacy of Traditional Brushes
Jeungpyeong County has constructed an Intangible Cultural Heritage Training Center for the first time since the county's establishment, setting out to build a transmission base to preserve the lineage of disappearing traditional culture.
The county announced that it held an opening ceremony for the "Jeungpyeong County Intangible Cultural Heritage Training Center" on the 26th, attended by approximately 100 people, including local residents and holders of intangible cultural heritage skills from North Chungcheong Province. The newly opened training center was established to systematically preserve and pass on the traditional brush-making techniques of Master Brushmaker Yu Pil-mu, the only holder of North Chungcheong Province's Intangible Cultural Heritage skills in the Jeungpyeong region.
Located in Hwaseong-ri, Doan-myeon, the training center was built with a total project cost of 640 million won and covers an area of 120.07 square meters; construction was completed last April. The facility is well-equipped with exhibition rooms, experience rooms, and actual workspaces, serving as a comprehensive transmission center capable of handling not only traditional training but also research, exhibitions, and hands-on programs.
Moving forward, the training center will play a pivotal role in promoting the value of traditional crafts, which are gradually fading from memory, to the local community and fostering future successors. In addition to regular technical training led by Master Yu Pil-mu, a variety of hands-on courses are planned for citizens to participate in directly.
Master Yu Pil-mu expressed his deep emotion at the establishment of the training center to pass on the traditional brush-making techniques he has preserved for so long. He conveyed his commitment to dedicating himself to education and transmission activities so that county residents can familiarize themselves with and learn traditional culture up close.
County Governor Lee Jae-young emphasized that the traditional brush-making technique, which Master Yu Pil-mu has dedicated his life to preserving, is a valuable asset of the region. He stated that he would continue to provide policy support and pursue related projects to ensure the newly opened training center establishes itself as a central hub for the preservation of intangible heritage.
